Bethesda making MMO which will "challenge the current market leaders"

Silver Mirror | September 11, 2008 | Press Release | PC Playstation 3
Bethesda are world renowned for their Elder Scrolls series. And hopefully again when Fallout 3 is released soon. But Bethesda are already looking ahead, their next project? A MMO.

Today in a press release today ZeniMax the owners of Bethesda stated that they were recruiting talented developers for the next big MMO. Is this a continuation of the Elder Scrolls Saga? Or even Fallout? Maybe even a new IP all together? Only time will tell.
In the press release ZeniMax states that at the Austin GDC they are recruiting talented people to begin work on an MMO. The press release Bethesda as one of their primary companies and touts them as the developer of Elder Scrolls and Fallout (not that we didn’t know that already).

I'm pretty positive that I read somewhere that some other company actually has the bought the rights to a Fallout MMORPG, and Bethesda owns the IP in every other way.

Maybe there will finally be a console MMORPG worth paying a subscription for. Not saying that I want them to make a subscription fee though, just saying that it might actually be worth it if they did make one.

Sounds really good. I remember a Bethesda rep saying something in an interview a while back about plans after Fallout 3 were to work on the next Elder Scrolls game. If I remember correctly, he said something along the lines of being unsure what kind of game it would be. Between that, the elderscrollsonline.com domain name purchase, and this article, my money's on Elder Scrolls Online.

Can't remember details or where I was talking about it but apparently Bethesda may be doing a Star Wars MMO. If it's true then this will be what they're talking about here.

Bethesda is a very talented publisher I'm sure anything they do will be of the highest quality. And with any luck, it will be a console MMO. I'd love a good one.

Please, no TES MMO. TES V and a TES MMO would be good, but not just an MMO.

I would love an MMO based on the Elder Scrolls lore, i mean i have always dreamed of merchants in stores being real people selling their latest creations. I think it could be really huge and very fun to play.

An Elder Scrolls MMO: You can't steal (it might be a skill, and pulling it off would probably be more Runescape-style thieving), can't kill random people (maybe a select few unimportant NPCs, but they'll respawn a few seconds later anyway). But idk, they said it would be better than any on the market so with a few tweaks but keeping the classic Elder Scrolls gameplay intact, it could happen, but I still can't see you being able to steal weapons or anything from the NPC vendors and what not lol.

Even with this article, an elder scrolls MMO is still a rumour. The evidence of the ownership to elderscrollsonline.com just shows that the idea was there a few years ago and that Zenimax/ Beth soft are fighting against those that steal the URL names and never use them. So they are squatting over the URL just in case the idea does come to reality.

The other bit of evidence is that a sum of money (either $3 million or $300 million) was given from Zenimax to Beth Soft. This could for the transfer of Beth soft employees to work at Zenimax Online or to buy the rights to use elder scrolls or fallout.

In other words, who knows? There are many different ideas and nothing has been officially stated. In fact not one official site of Beth Soft, Zenimax or Elder Scrolls gives any clues to this except people and press releases are stating that the Zenimax Online studio are connected to the company that make Elder scrolls and Fallout.

It could be true and I hope they make an elder scrolls MMO that knocks WoW fanboys into oblivion (no pun intended ) but don't get your hopes up.

Also Subtle, they would fix all that. Don't forget they have made the series all singleplayer...now they have the chance to make a MMO from scratch...so we're not talking about a singleplayer version turning into a MMO. We're talking about a company making a MMO from scratch, knowing full well what players want to do

yeah if WAR doesnt manage to go over as well as i and Mythic hopes, there needs to be an MMO in development to dethrone WOW. its only a matter of time before WOW is not the best MMO anymore.
