Official numbers are in: Fallout 3 shipped 4.7 million copies last week for the launch, bringing in over $300 million. The game has outsold the rest of its entire franchise in one week -- no small feat. Pictured here is the average Fallout 1/2 fan's face after reading this news.
Released on October 28 in North America at midnight store openings in over 2,000 retail outlets nationwide jammed with fans eager to get the game, Fallout 3 quickly became one of the industrys top sellers around the world. For example, in the United Kingdom where it was not released until Friday, October 31 the rapid sales of Fallout 3 have led the game to be ranked number one among all video games, as well as being the number one game on each of its three platforms.

Honestly each game [well the first two] were their own standalone entities... the only thing you miss out on are "cameos" or references to things from previous games that have only a small part to do with the story, and moreso to bring smile on fanboy faces.
All of the lore you need to know from the first 2 games is presented in one form or another in 3... so while you may miss out on experiencing 2 of the top 10 RPGs ever released on the PC - it isn't like you are watching Return of the Jedi without seeing New Hope or Empire strikes Back.
Well congrats Bethesda.
