In a press release today, Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games have announced that Max Payne 3 is currently in development and will release in Winter 2009 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC. The game will be developed by Rockstar Vancouver, the studio responsible for Bully.

Max Payne 3 will be set after the events of Max Payne 2, and will not be set in New York. The official site for the game can be found here.

Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is proud to announce that Max Payne 3 is currently in development and scheduled for a winter 2009 release on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC. Developed by Rockstar Vancouver, Max Payne 3 tells the story of a retired police detective embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence.

The award-winning Max Payne franchise put players in the role of Max Payne, a hard-boiled New York City detective with a penchant for violence, out to avenge the death of his family. The latest installment delivers more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love, while moving the story of Max in a new direction.

"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."

Since leaving the NYPD and New York itself behind, Max has drifted from bad to worse. Double-crossed and a long way from home, Max is now trapped in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out.

Max Payne 3 will be available in winter 2009 for Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 and PC.

And will this be released side-by-side with Rambo 5 or Terminator 4? -_-

The Max Payne series is one of my favourites in gaming, I was worried we wouldn't get a third.

I never played the first 2 games, but I might buy this just to see what the series is like. Look forward to seeing some more about it.

Oh my god, yes! Finally, an announcement! Always played Max Payne on a PC, but I hope that the console versions will be top-notch.

Wonder what engine they're gonna use? My guess: a new version of RAGE and some Euphoria.

Wish it was developed by a higher profile studio within Rockstar Games, i am sure it'll be good but i'd rather Rockstar North or even Rockstar Leeds. Though it will be interesting, the game better be good otherwise it will tarnish the other 2 and i don't want that.

Oh and if Microsoft nerf this game by getting exclusive DLC that in some way leaves PS3 gamers not getting the full story i will be extremely pissed off. Can't put anything past Microsoft and Rockstar these days.

YES! I've been waiting for this for a long time. Got them both, and ill be picking this up without a doubt. This was actually meant to be released in January 2008, but who cares if its coming two years late, at least its coming!

Am I the only one cynical about this game? Really?

You are not alone, i just want to know if Sam Lake has signed on to do this as he is the only reason Max Payne 1 and 2 were great games, the gameplay in Max Payne has never been amazing, the graphics have never been amazing, it has always been the writing and dialogue this game better have Sam Lake.

I've no idea what you're talking about, it's nothing revolutionary but Max Payne is fun as hell.

He means that what made Max Payne what it was, for a lot of fans anyway, was the story and graphic novel style cutscenes. I can, and have, just watched them all as if it were a movie because I liked them that much. Don't get me wrong, it isn't as if it was the only thing good about the game, but without the dark graphic novel style of it, it isn't really Max Payne, not for us at least.

"I had a dream of my wife...she was dead, but it was alright."

This is the last line from Max Payne 2, what more could they add to the storyline anyways?

I'm sure this will involve something other than his wife's murder. I hope so. I don't want them to beat it into the ground. It was what really made the other games' story so intense. But then again, what could they do if they didn't follow it anymore?

Well, at the end of Max Payne 2, he's pretty much lost everything.

Max Payne 3 will be him fighting to get things back, in a sense. He obviously can't get back his wife, child, or Mona, but I think he'll be fighting to get his sanity and normal life back.

I hope they go with the ending where Mona dies. It'd screw everyone up if she's alive in MP3. Not everyone finishes the game on the hardest difficulty. Either way, I can't wait for it. MP2 was one of my favorite PS2 games because of its noir-like atmosphere. Hopefully the trend continues in this one.

Remedy must be too busy working on Alan Wake, which better bloody come out this year.

Max Payne 3 is good news, however the 2nd game concluded quite well and sustained a negative, dreary conclusion whilst concluding plotlines and characters. Not too keen on having Max Payne continue on, unless the writes provide something that justifies another title.

It depends which ending. If it's the one where Mona is dying, it can justified a new Max Payne. If it's the one where she's alive, a Max Payne 3 would not set unless that something happened in between.

That's a Default ending (beating it in easier difficulties) against a hard to get alternate ending (beating it in the hardest mode), I'm pretty sure Mona's dead. Either way, Payne came to terms with both his wife's and Mona's deaths at the end of the game anyways.

I always thought the ending where Mona survived was canon...

Does this really need to be made? I didn't really find the first two at all appealing.

I think there are definitely enough shitty pointless games out there to let this pass.

Besides, I don't know if you can tell, but it seems that several people are looking forward to this even though you aren't.

I loved the two Max Payne, I'm glad to hear that a third one is announced. I'm just sad that Mona will probably not be there as it seems that the first ending will be canon. I loved that woman.
