Electronic Theatre reports on the completion of a licensing agreement that sees Unigine, a toolset that provides photorealistic 3D rendering, a powerful physics module, object-oriented scripting and much more, become available to PLAYSTATION 3 developers.

Unigine engine provides photorealistic 3D render, powerful physics module, object-oriented scripting system with a very rich library (more than 3000 methods out-of-the box), full-featured GUI module, sound subsystem, and a set of flexible tools. Efficient and well-architected framework supporting multi-core systems makes Unigine a highly scalable solution, on which multi-platform games with different hardware requirements can be based.

    Sounds cool but I wouldn't mind to know how it compares to the dev tools that other companies use right now. For all we know, it could be outdated :/

    Judging by the tech demo's on the developers site it's more comparible to that of CryEngine 3 than anything else. Maybe not as high quality as what Crytek put their name to but there are some valuable tools in this set that in the hands of a skilled developer could be phenomenal.
