Jagex Aid Arrest of Runescape Account Hacker

Electronic Theatre reports on the announcement that collaborative efforts from Jagex, the Police Central e-Crime Unit and the FBI have lead to an arrest of a UK resident suspected to be hacking Runescape accounts.

Jagex Games Studio today confirmed that a UK resident has been arrested following collaboration with the Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU). The arrest is part of Jagex’s ongoing effort to combat the theft of accounts in RuneScape.com, the world’s most popular free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game.

    Look, I can somewhat understand the guy getting in trouble considering it was hacking and phishing, but sadly, there's one point I have to make.

    I might not know a lot about Runescape, but an ACTUAL ARREST OVER AN ONLINE GAME is just way too far. If real life money is involved then fair enough, but ffs, it's a bloody game! A free game! Come on, what's next? Arresting maphackers on FPS/RTS games or gold farmers on WoW or something? Once you start down this road of arresting people over games, especially something small like account stealing, then it's only going to become more widespread. I want games to stay as games, if no real life money is involved, then just ban people like that or whatever.

      But the thing is, a lot of people pay for Runescape subscriptions, which cost money. So stealing them would be equivalent to real-life theft.

      There is a limited version of the game that is free. If you pay, which I think most players do, you get access to more features and more areas. Theft of anything in that game is criminal as there is real money involved.
