In a press release released via its Investor Relations site, Nintendo has announced a new handheld: the Nintendo 3DS, a portable that will succeed the best-selling Nintendo DS, which has sold over 125 million units worldwide as of December 2009.

The Nintendo 3DS will feature 3D without the need for 3D glasses, ushering in a new generation of handhelds. Additionally, the device will be backwards-compatible with Nintendo DS and DSi software. The 3DS will be formally unveiled at this year's E3 by Nintendo in Los Angeles on June 15th. The system will release within the next fiscal year, which ends in March 2011.

3D without the need for glasses? I'm a bit skeptical... How does that work and for that matter, how well? I can't wait to see a demo.

There's a gif demonstrating the effect that I saw somewhere and it was actually quite brilliant, if it's the same one they're using. That said it's still a gimmick and won't make the core games themselves any better, so meh.

Looking forward to this. Was not keen on the whole DSi thing but this does look to be a proper step up.

3D without the glasses? Whilst I'm extremely skeptical of games in 3D anyway, this could well be quite interesting, especially considering it's a handheld system. Nice to hear it's backwards compatible as well.

I hope they aren't going to use a lenticular effect. You know those novelty posters that have a bumpy texture as it is two layers of directional plastic to give the image underneath a 3D effect. I don't see Nintendo being the first to do no glasses 3D through hardware, I do think it will have to be a screen gimmick that will lower the quality of the image.

I reckon it will have a camera on the front that will move the viewpoint of the in game camera according to your head movements, it's a very good 3D mimic

    Ugh. 3D, like in movies?

I'm sorry, I probably won't buy this until the DS completely dies.

Ugh, not another one. The graphics on this thing are horrible, they'll look even worse in 3D.
