Bungie Split with Microsoft Confirmed

Akira_EX | October 05, 2007 | Press Release | XBOX 360 Company
Well, this rumor is now confirmed.

Bungie becomes an independent company, with a "primary focus on Microsoft's platforms", and refers to this as a "partnership to include new IP created and owned by Bungie".

In layman's terms, Bungie gets to make something other than Halo. It also seems like they'll stick to the 360, instead of developing for other systems, for better or for worse.

Unfortunately, there are no financial details available as of right now, nor the real motive.
Bungie Studios Becomes Privately Held Independent Company

Bungie and Microsoft forge new long-term relationship.

KIRKLAND, Wash. — Oct. 5, 2007 — Bungie and Microsoft Corp. today announced a plan for Bungie Studios, the developers of Microsoft’s “Halo” franchise, to become a privately held independent company, Bungie, LLC, in which Microsoft will hold a minority equity interest. As part of this transaction, Bungie and Microsoft have forged a deep and long-term development and publishing relationship focused on the continued success of the “Halo” franchise. It is also the intent of both parties to expand their partnership to include new IP created and owned by Bungie.

Bungie’s critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive “Halo 3” achieved $300 million in global sales in its first week. Released on Tuesday, Sept. 25, “Halo 3” is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. “We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft’s platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios, and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through ‘Halo’ and beyond.”

“Working with Microsoft was great for us, it allowed us to grow as a team and make the ambitious, blockbuster games we all wanted to work on. And they will continue to be a great partner. But Bungie is like a shark. We have to keep moving to survive. We have to continually test ourselves, or we might as well be dolphins. Or manatees,” said Jason Jones, Bungie founder and partner.

Bungie’s management retained the services of Don Leeds, senior managing director of B-Hive Global, LLC, to assist in the structuring of the deal and negotiating on their behalf. Bungie will remain in Kirkland, Washington, and is always looking to hire excellent talent.

About Bungie

Bungie was founded in 1991 with two goals: to develop games that combine brilliant technology, beautiful art, intelligent stories and deep gameplay, and to sell enough of those games to achieve its real goal of total world domination. Over the past 10 years it has produced games such as the “Marathon” trilogy and the first two “Myth” games, hailed as classics by critics and gamers around the world. Bungie’s “Halo” franchise is an international award-winning action title that has grown into a global entertainment phenomenon, selling more than 18 million units worldwide, logging billions of hours of multiplayer action on Xbox LIVE®, and spawning action figures, books, graphic novels, soundtracks, apparel and more. The critically acclaimed “Halo 3”, released on Tuesday, Sept. 25th 2007, is the fastest-selling video game ever, achieving $300 million in global sales its first week, making it one of the most successful entertainment properties in history. Ha. ^^ I knew it. That was too obviously possible to simply dismiss. I'd love to laugh in the faces of all the Halo and Microsoft fanboys that insulted the original poster. Well, good for Bungie. I feel its for the best. Let Bungie do as they please. Heh...

Perhaps the Ps3 will now see some really good titles from Bungie as well as the 360 even though they've said they'll be sticking with the 360.

I would expect the Wii to be the console they would go for more, they are still going largely for the Xbox360, so anything they won't be doing for the Xbox360 is probably another handheld tittle or on occasion a Wii tittle.

You know, I find myself wondering if Halo DS is a real possibility now that Bungie no longer serves the Microsoft tyrants. Hmmm... From the demos I saw, it looked like it would have been a lot of fun. For a series as popular as Halo, its only natural that a portable come along. Kingdom Hearts, Grand Theft Auto, and so many other's found their way onto a Nintendo handheld. Heh...

But Halo was what made the company good... ao when Halo 4 comes out they'll have to get a company like Bungy to help make it... =(

Lets hope for the best that Bungie come back after 1 week exhausted/confused wanting to work again... =D

Your reasoning is a bit off. Bungie and Microsoft now have a partnership, and probably will be tapped for the next Halo if or when it is decided.

I think they spilt because of Halo. I bet Microsoft were putting pressure on them to make a fourth one and Bungie knowing no matter what they did it wouldn't be as good as the others left Microsoft

They're still focused on Microsoft, even though games for other systems are a possibility. Kinda like the relationship Insomniac has with Sony.

Guess they got sick of the pressure M$ put on them. They'll still definately develop games for M$, but at least now it's at their own pace.

Do you guys read? Microsoft owns the rights to the Halo franchise and will continue to publish Bungie's games. More than likely, they'll remain exclusive to Microsoft's platforms.

Well I am interested to see what other games Bungie can produce and whether they can keep up to standards with the Halo series. At least Microsoft don't have Bungie on a leash now.
