WiiWare Launches in North America

Akira_EX | May 12, 2008 | Press Release | Wii
WiiWare, Nintendo's new development platform, is now available. Much akin to the Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store, WiiWare allows developers and teams with smaller budgets to bring their unique ideas for the Wii to fruition. WiiWare has already launched in Japan.

There are six titles available at launch for WiiWare:
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Square Enix, 1 Player, 1500 Points
  • LostWinds, Frontier Development, 1-2 Players, 1000 Points
  • Defend Your Castle, XGen Studios, 1-4 Players, 500 Points
  • Pop, Nnooo, 1-4 Players, 700 Points
  • V.I.P. Casino Blackjack, High Voltage Software, 1-4 Players, 700 Points
  • TV Show King, Gameloft, 1-4 Players, 1000 Points

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King is a city-building simulation, where the player control a young king as he tries to rebuild a kingdom that had been lost to the miasma of the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game. The king must keep up the daily upkeep of the city, by keeping his subjects happy, and also build up his kingdom, by sending adventurers to conquer dungeons and retrieve the resource elementite, which is used to create buildings. The game features downloadable content in the for of extra races, buildings, dungeons and outfits.

LostWinds is an action-platformer where the player controls the wind to aid the protagonist Toku as he quests to defeat an evil elemental. Players control the wind by using the Wiimote in conjunction with Toku's movements to allow him to jump higher, stun enemies and solve puzzles.

Defend Your Castle is a new version of the classic Flash game of the same name, this time using the Wiimote instead of a mouse. Additions for the Wii version include a new four-player cooperative mode, so you and up to three friends can defend your castle together by picking up and throwing enemies or utilizing various spells and arrows.

Pop features great, aesethic visuals and cool music as you continuously pop bubbles to better your score against a time limit. There also is a four-player competitive mode, where you and up to three other players can go head-to-head for a better score. Available are the use of various powerups that can be used to hinder your opponents.

VIP Casino Blackjack is a blackjack game, where players can try to increase their bankroll by playing some casino blackjack, in a Las Vegas-styled casino, and against a realistic Las Vegas dealer. Multiple players also have the option to go head-to-head in a mini-blackjack tournament.

TV Show King is a trivia game where up to four players can participate in a quiz show, where the fastest answer will get you the most points. The game sports upwards of 3000 questions in six categories spanning from geography to pop culture, and more. Players are represented by their Miis.

New WiiWare releases will occur on Mondays, alongside Virtual Console updates. Please note that this week, there is no Virtual Console update for today; the day is solely dedicated to WiiWare.
