It's been the footie fans series of choice since it's early days on the PS2, yet last year's disappointing next-generation effort left the many fans of PES disillusioned. This was heightened in the face of arguably the strongest offering from the FIFA team yet, the series which has often been, at least in many critics eyes, that one step behind Konami's Pro Evo series.
However, Konami have released some details about Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, promising better graphics, improved controls and - much to Pro Evo fans delight - a revamped online mode. As is usual, Konami are aiming to release the game in the Autumn. Will Pro Evo 2009 be a rebirth for the series, or will it be yet another next-generation disappointment?
NB: Pro Evo 2009 will also be released on Playstation 2.
The most obvious improvement will be the graphics, focusing more on getting licensed players to look like their real-life counterparts.
New moves, control elements and online features are all promised too, with improved internet play being one thing fans of the series have been pleading for.
"The announcement of a new PES game is always a highlight for Konami, but PES 2009 looks set to reaffirm the series utter superiority," commented Jon Murphy, project leader for Konami.
