After
IGN's preview of Fatal Frame IV, many people were worried about the lack of IR controls and how IGN believed the game had a rather steep learning curve as a result of it.
DelightfullyDreadful of Gametrailers wanted to quell those worries, and has written a brief preview of his positive experience with the first chapter of
Fatal Frame IV. Within ten minutes he was comfortable with the controls, and believed that they were rather straight-forward and not as difficult to master as IGN's preview implied.
DelightfullyDreadful was also impressed with the scares, and the use of music and sound in the game, admitting that some parts made him jump.

First things first, the game is intense!
Started up the game, and the first thing I noticed was the sound. The sound design in the game is unbelievably frightening. I'm not sure how they do it, but they managed to make a stereo TV sound as if it was surround. I noticed that right off the bat when the Disc Channel loaded. It's even more apparent in the game. You can hear some screams and random noises from the speaker.
After saving, you're sent to the title screen which gives you 4 options; New Game, Load, Album and Options. The album is there so you can look at the photos you've taken in the game, and possibly share them? I'm not sure about the last part, though.
Quickly, I'd like to mention that there is no use of an IR pointer in the game, which is a nice change. The menu system is all navigated through the use of the nunchuck.
So here we are at the opening movie; no CGI, all in-game and it looks fantastic! Everything looks so smooth, and the cloth effects looked so pretty! I was on a 37" LCD TV at the time, and of course, I was running it in 480p.
Two girls are there, and they're babbling on about the house. One of the girls leaves and disappears, now I have to go and find her. There are two ways to go. Upstairs, or to the Left.
I chose to go upstairs, but was quickly turned away because my character felt it was 'too dark' up there. So, off to the left! I walked down a narrow hallway, and I notice the lighting. Lovely.
The controls were really straight forward, but at the beginning it felt awkward. The control stick is used to walk forward and backwards, and it's also used to look left and right. Z is used to Run, and C is used to sidestep. The nice thing about running is that you don't have to use the control stick at all, just press Z and off you go in the direction you're facing.
I didn't have the flashlight yet, but the controls work the same...with or without it. Tilt up on the Wii Remote to look up, or to point the light and tilt the Wii remote down to do the opposite. Shining the flashlight left and right are left up to the control stick. Don't worry, it becomes fairly natural after a while. By the time the camera was in my grasp, I was already used to the control system. It'll take some getting used to, but it gets comfortable.
