(Hands-On Impressions) Dead Rising Wii "Doesn't approach the level of polish, complexity, or overall experience of the original"

Gothic Girl | August 24, 2008 | Previews | Wii XBOX 360
At GamesConvention 2008, Kotaku got their hands on a demo of Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop for Wii ... and they were thoroughly disappointed, claiming that so many things have been cut out during the conversion from 360 to Wii that the "hobbled" Wii version "can't begin to approach the level of polish, complexity, and the overall experience of the original".

Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop for the Nintendo Wii is not a game for members of the press. It's nearly impossible for us to look at the game objectively after spending countless hours playing the highly superior Xbox 360 original. It's like reading War and Peace and then trying to fully appreciate the Cliff Notes version. It can't begin to approach the level of polish, complexity, and the overall experience of the original, plus your friends might laugh at you if they catch you buying it. As I sat in on a hands on session with the title, I could see by the expressions on my peers' faces that no one seemed to be all that impressed.

No, Dead Rising for the Wii is for those folks who haven't owned a 360, haven't been steeped in Dead Rising press releases, news stories, previews, and reviews over the past couple of years - basically folks that don't read our website all that much. With that in mind, let's look at what's changing in the hobbled version of Dead Rising.

In order to maximize resources, Capcom had to sacrifice weapons. Any weapon that had a similar function as another has been condensed into one. This helps performance of course, but in exchange you lose the feeling of immersion you used to receive from being able to pick up nearly anything and use it as a weapon.

Dead Rising: Shop Til You Drop might be one of the best zombie-shooting games the Wii has ever seen, but unless you've never been exposed to the original game you you might find some of the cuts a bit too deep.

It IS a port after all with a completely new control scheme. Since it's the Wii, it also won't live up to the graphic quality that is the XBOX 360. The zombies probably seem a lot fewer since the Wii's system can't read 1000 + zombies on screen at once.

That's something the people aren't really realizing if they're giving it reviews like this. I'd give it some credit at least. It's not going to be as good, of course, but they'll do their best with it.

It isn't a matter of "what they're expecting", it's just how the game is compared to the original. Since that's what they have to go by, they're obviously going to judge it based on that scale.

Also, not having as many zombies on screen isn't a "small" thing, because killing hordes of zombies at once is almost the entire appeal of the game.

Tbh, this article is crap. They say how some of the weapons were sacrificed, yet they don't give any examples.

And obviously the Wii wouldn't be able to handle hundreds of zombies on the screen at the same time, so I don't know what Kotaku was expecting? It still looks like a great game that I'll definitely play no matter what. Kotaku just likes to nitpick at the smallest things.

Whoever reviewed this seriously needs to get a clue and not put this on a scale against the 360 version. He/She should rate this as a brand new game, not an exact port. What were they expecting from it anyways? A totally identical game?

There just saying they were disappointed with it, they also mentioned good things about this version, Seems like the article writer forgot to add that part into the quote, they mentioned it as one of the best games on wii.

All they are saying is that Capcom has failed to deliver the same "feel" as the 360 version.

Where? The exact words were: "Dead Rising: Shop Til You Drop might be one of the best zombie-shooting games the Wii has ever seen" which isn't saying much considering there are so few zombie-shooters on Wii... RE4 and RE: Umbrella Chronicles are probably the two best ones, and one of those is a port while the other is a rehashed rail shooter.

I guess I'm just disappointed, like Kotaku. The never-ending flow of 360/PS3 ports that Wii keeps getting just keep on showing us what the Wii isn't capable of. Rather than making news games that play to the Wii's strengths, third-parties keep on porting games to the Wii for a quick buck while cutting out a bunch of content so all we get is subpar ports of games that we know are better on other consoles. >_>
It's especially disappointing when games like Dead Rising get ported, whose sold reason for existing was to show what the 360 was capable of (thousands of zombies on screen, the ability to pick up anything and use it as a weapon, etc). Big points in the game are being cut out for the Wii version because it can't fit onto the disc ... and it's disappointing. >_>

Well this article was more of the lines saying its not on par with the 360 version quality and how they were disappointed. Not so much that the game sucks or isn't good.

I love how people misinterpret it as such.
It was obvious it was going to happen.

This was easy to see as SOON as Capcom announced it. I mean I think I pointed it out about a couple of months ago that the zombie count was gonna have to be taken into consideration. All this was pretty much foreseeable anyways
