Jim Reilly of Kotaku recently got his hands on a copy of Silent Hill: Homecoming and was vastly impressed, claiming that the Silent Hill series "might be coming back on the upswing" after the disappointments of Silent Hill 4: The Room and Silent Hill: Origins.

Discuss in the Silent Hill: Homecoming forum

I spent a little bit of time with Silent Hill: Homecoming on the 360 yesterday at Konami's NYC event. I've been kind of lukewarm on the series since The Room, so my expectations weren't extremely high going in. I must say, however, Silent Hill might be coming back on the upswing after this.

It looks like Konami learned from The Room and is taking trying to take everything back to the early titles in the series. Everything that should make a good Silent Hill game is here. How the story holds up, or, if it makes any sense at all, remains to be seen. The improved combat and player mobility should position this game towards the more mainstream audience and will give me hope for a survival-horror renaissance.

Never played a SH game after 4.But I have to say that the game sucked.

Though I've never finished nor even bought a SH game, I do like the series and I'm glad it's better that 4.

Tbh, I don't see what was so awful about SH4. Sure, it was a disappointment compared to previous SH games, but I wouldn't call it a bad game.
It was quite a good game actually, despite it's lack of bosses and puzzles (and it's abundance of backtracking). But in the end, I enjoyed it, and liked that Walter Sullivan's backstory was delved into (even if it did contradict his plot from SH2). I liked it enough to play it all over again.

Kotaku's idea of "improvements" in Homecoming seem to be identical to my idea of "disappointments" in a Silent Hill game. >_>

I agree, I actually enjoyed SH4, though somethings was a little off from a normal SH game, I still loved it over all. Not the best, but as you said not bad.

The monsters were unable to be killed am I right? If they were killable, I never managed to get it done. That is the whole reason I disliked it.I thought the premise was brilliant but not being able to kill enemies is a big no no for me.

You got me there. The unkillable ghosts were a pain in the ass, and probably the worst addition to a Silent Hill game ... ever.
And Walter was invincible until the final battle, though that's because he was the main antagonist.

But every other monster was killable. What mode did you play the game on? They're pretty easy to kill in Easy and Normal mode. Just a few hits to the head with a plank of wood (or a few gunshots) and most monsters would go down.

They were annoying but I think they added to the "horror" aspect of the game. In a way, taking control out of your hands makes the game that much scarier. That's one reason why I don't consider Resident Evil a horror game anymore. They give you grenade launchers ffs! Wow, those zombie Spaniards are real scary now....

That being said, even in the three games prior to SH4, I spent most of them running away from monsters. In the first Silent Hill, you really did need to kill some of them to get anywhere because they're relentless and fast. But afterwards, I noticed that sometimes you had a better chance of survival by going around obstacles and running away like a pu-... yeah, by running away. xD

It's not like The Room and Origins were bad. Obviously they were not up to par with the past games (mostly because Origins was a handheld?) but they didn't pull the "financial/mainstream" card and make another shooter (Which Climax US was just about to do).

I enjoyed The Room and Origins a lot more than Silent Hill 3. I must be the only one!
