OXCGN takes a look at the Resident Evil 5 demo released in Japan only a few days ago. Not yet released in the west, but we've managed to get our hands on some 360 game demo and it sure looks great.
OXCGN staffer runs over the game and seems suitably impressed so far. Slip over to the site and check it out along with some video and pics to gaze upon.
First off Im not a fan of the Resident Evil games, having never played any of them apart from what Ive been told was a crappy port of Resident Evil 4 on the PC. I know, its a shock, but there you go: Im a Resident Evil virgin.
Ten minutes into playing that PC version and one word entered my brain: deletion. Off it went, deleted. Everyone had fussed over how awesome it was and even some of our staff thought it was the Game Of That Console Generation (umm dkpatriarch, cough cough).
For me, though, I never saw what all the fuss was about, and I was just meh towards the whole game and franchise itself. Now we have Resident Evil 5 which is set to hit consoles next year, and boy are the fans excited.

Anyone that say there are no good games out or that there's none worth having is basically spoilt or simply saying stuff to create problems. Gamers have the best choice and over supply of games in any generation todate. This is just one more game making the choice even harder as to which one to get - first.
Though may i ask XboxOZ360, why recently and it's only recently have your replies had an almost aggressive tone in their wording? I have noticed it with a few of the writers on the website aswell, maybe you are not being aggressive but reputation means a lot and when you are tied to a website as well everything you say or do affects that site. I'd like to think a lot of what you say is in a light hearted tone but as it is words i can only analyse the words used and come to my own conclusions.
Anyone?
Personally Resident Evil is a slow, clunky and at times frustratingly bad game that works because all the things that are annoying add to the atmospheric scares, the fixed camera that leaves you blind for 3 seconds, the inverted controls when you are walking towards the camera and not away from it, all of that made Resident Evil great as a horror game. The story was bad but it scared people and thats all a horror game needs to do.
I understand it's for tension purposes that you need to be constantly facing numbers of enemies to keep you on your edge about most of the game. The problem is that the action oriented gameplay completely takes away any kind of horror aspect...seeing as you're completely armed to the TEETH and knowing that you won't run out of ammo any time soon...it pretty much defeats any kind of "Survival" aspect in "Survival Horror".
But...there's really no stopping it. Just like how long time Fallout fans complained about Fallout 3, you always gotta remember how RE turned and how THEY probably liked RE4 better; it's inevitable. That's why the only horror franchise I base my "faith" on is in the SIREN franchise. They changed the game a bit but I sure as hell won't see it turn into a shooter in my lifetime.
The story alone makes me want to buy this game.
Online and Mercenaries don't hurt either
Different situations and different gamers experiences come into play here. For me, I've turned off the horror genre now as a gamer; I just feel it doesnt do anything for me, and as such, I prefer the action orientated style of Resident Evil 5. It is pleasing to know that there will be some substance to the story this time, and that Umbrella, Wesker and the Origins of the virus come into play.
I think what Capcom needs to do is really push Survival Horror back into the games. Sure, the camera and general controls have changed dramatically, but theres no reason why Resident Evil cannot adopt scares from Silent Hill, Dead Space etc and still provide a chilling atmosphere and riveting story amongst their new gameplay style. I think their pure action-orientated roots is where many gamers fall outa touch with the series. But as I said before, I do not look for the horror in these titles, as it is lost on me, but infusing the horror back into the franchise would reobtain the hearts of a few who followed the series from its beginnings.
Despite this, I will still pick this up come March 2009, and look forward to playing co-op with some of you maybe! (Xbox360)
Its not so much of the gameplay change that turned off some of the older fans, its so much as in how it was portrayed.
An action game.
The enemies dropped ammo and health constantly which took the choice of "should I run or waste precious ammo??"
In harder modes you will run low on ammo and health but you won't experience the fear as you did in the originals.
Here even with the new camera they could've still made it so that it would be hard to see your enemy (around the corner, behind that door, behing you WITHOUT screaming I'm behind you etc)
But since everything was out in the open you would either say,
To easy
or
I'm screwed.
No suspense building up everytime you hear something drop.
And no more ------ WHOAH!!!
I went off on a rant there.....hehe.....well I think I made my statment so I'm off.
Oh and I'm saving ALL my free gold trial versions of XBL for this game! lol.
I think the true beauty of RE5 is that, for the first time in the series, we can share the horrors and tension with someone else. Nice rant by the way.
I dont mind being Sheva though.
