Now that the Resident Evil 5 demo is available on Xbox Live, people will be wondering if it's worth the download? Here are gamecyte.com's impressions of the demo ... They say it's definitely worth it!

Discuss in the Resident Evil 5 forum

Communication issues aside, the "RE5" demo leaves me optimistic for the full game. The levels pit the player against constant swarms of Majini and a pair of deadly minibosses, ammo is sparse, there are lots of hidden tricks (try barricading the door in "Assembly Place"), and one's partner -- assuming you can talk to them -- feels like a genuinely helpful addition.

"Resident Evil 5" launches on March 13th.

One of the most anticipated games released this generation? You'd have to be pretty idiotic to not at least try the game.

Is this game really that seriously anticipated? Last I checked people weren't all impressed with the last few iterations and interest waned off.

Interest waned off for me once I saw the gameplay trailers. RE4 was solid, cant speak for the few previous, but they seemed good.

The last one had an average rating of 96/100 on metacritic.

        Storm Jan 27, 09
Yeah I agree, I don't feel this is that anticipated. I mean, my impression of it is just another Co-Op shooter...if only they maintained the style from the old games...sigh. Ah well, RE4 was decent enough for an action game, so yeah I'd say it's worth a download.

I personally think RE4 was the best PS2 game of all.

RE4 wasn't my favourite PS2 game (mines is probably GTA III) but I can certainly see why someone would see it as the best PS2 game.

It didn't get an average of 96/100 for no reason.

It's in the casual domain now it'll sell by the truck load even if it sucks. Now i haven't played this game yet but if it's like Resident Evil 4 i.e. Ammo everywhere, weapons everywhere and easy enemies then this game will be enjoyable but not what i want. I just ask for a few scares then i'll be happy.
    • 1
      Tenken* Jan 27, 09
That's the thing, people are now complaining about a lack of ammo and weapons everywhere. Enemy AI seems to be the same as RE4, there's just a hell of a lot more enemies to tackle.

Not my type of game. So to me it's not worth the download. I just wonder when the average zombie still has enough higher-brain activity to be smart enough to use weapons and drive vehicles and all that.
    • 0
      Storm Jan 27, 09
Well, some zombies can be smart...when you're in control, ala Left 4 Dead.

        They're not zombies. They're Majini
        • 0
          pooOBKp Jan 27, 09
What's a Majini? How are they different than a zombie? Does RE have zombies and Majini or is it all the zombies are Majini?

The Las Plagas-infected villagers from Resident Evil 5. "Majini" is a Swahili or Zigula word for "evil spirit".
          Does that answer your question?

          pooOBKp Jan 27, 09
So the Majini are new to RE5? And they are rabid but still have more intelligence?
        • 0
          Smiffers* Jan 27, 09
No, the virus is the same, the effects are the same (I think) but they are called the Maniji, meaning evil spirit.

          pooOBKp Jan 27, 09
So I've never played a RE game til the RE5 demo. Were the zombies always wielding weapons?
        • 0
          Hunskelper Jan 27, 09
Technically, there never were any zombies in the Resident Evil series. They're all zombie-like mutants.

And it was Resi4 that introduced weapon wielding enemies.
        • 0
          HisServant77 Jan 28, 09
Well I've never played the games, but have seen the movies and the only ones that I remember from the movies not being an actual zombie was the big bad boss type person. The rest were reanimated dead bodies, right (Beside the ones infected who slowly became overcome by it)? Is it different in the games?
        • 0
          Hunskelper Jan 28, 09
It was caused by an virus in the first 3 games, therefore, they're not zombies.

For all intents and purposes, they are zombies. They walk like zombies, they attack like zombies, the sound like zombies. They just.. aren't. :3
        • 0
          Miss Razz Jan 29, 09
But for the sake of awesomeness, we call them "zombies" and "bio-weapons".

It's more interesting than: "people suffering from the T-Virus".
        • 0
          HisServant77 Jan 30, 09
Yeah, but doesn't it reanimate dead bodies?

        RabidChinaGirl Jan 27, 09
Or in Halo, ala the Flood. XD
        • 0
          HisServant77 Jan 27, 09
I don't know about that one either though. I mean the flood was basically controlled by a big huge alien thingamabob that wasn't a zombie, and had more than enough higher brain activity.

    dmf_dynasty Jan 27, 09
Uggh, I couldn't get into the demo. Besides the fact that I just wasn't very good, the AI seemed pretty bad. Most enemies would just stand there waiting to be headshot despite being right next to me and others would run flailing at me. There were a few smart ones who waited until I reloaded then charged at me though.

    RabidChinaGirl Jan 27, 09
Man, it's just a demo. It's not like you need to give away your liver just to play. Regardless of what any "demo reviews" say, it's flippin' free. If you don't like it, delete it!

    Really.

      Fatal Error Jan 29, 09
So? That doesn't mean anything if you're playing poor games and/or sports games all the time. RE4 was good, but not even close to the best PS2 game I played. Hell, it's not even close to the best RE game in the series.
      • 0
        Gamesta100 Jan 29, 09
I hate 99% of sports games.

Poor games? Ok if you call games like GOW, GTA, Kingdom Hearts, Soul Calibur, Jak and Daxter, Final Fantasy, MGS, Tekken, Burnout poor games, then yes I do like playing "poor" games. Not to mention two of the most overlooked games ever (imo, though obviously unless you agree then my opinion is useless), Beyond Good and Evil and Freedom Fighters.

But I guess that because YOU don't think RE4 is even close to the greatest PS2 game means I should bow down to your superior taste in games and give up MY opinion?
        • 1
          Fatal Error Jan 30, 09
Soul Calibur, Kingdom Hearts, Tekken, Burnout, and (yes) Final Fantasy games on the PS2 should never be in a discussion for "best game" on any console. Add in that the best MGS game was for PS1, Jak & Daxter isn't exactly what people consider a "GoTY" contender, and your selection is pretty limited. Seriously, there's nothing about RE4 that makes it stand out at all, especially when it strays so far from what made RE a good series in the first place.

Protip Control Type A is best suited for those who excessivley played RE4. It feels the most like the GCN/PS2/Wii builds.

Beyond that, I enjoyed the demo. It's going to take me a while to get used to the real-time inventory, but it only adds to the tension. I love it.

You may think that, But i and many other people have a strict Usage allowance we need to stay under, and because my ISP sucks i can't just download every 500-1.5gb demo i find, Because it will quickly turn into an exceedance charge, and me paying more money, along with online play, Internet, and watching videos online, i need to pick my demos/live downloads wisely.

Well what WOULD be a zombie if it's not a reanimated corpse (as shown in other RE's)? According to the traditional (and original) concept of horror zombies, they're dead, they're slow, and they eat anyone.

Now from RE4 forth, those guys obviously aren't zombies...since they never really died...they're just mindless hosts to a Parasite.
    • 0
      Hunskelper Jan 30, 09
The "zombies" in the first 3 never died either. They were infected with the T-Virus.
      • 2
        Seeker X Jan 30, 09
The symptoms for the infection included from illness, to coma, to death (or just death to those that were eaten alive). They came back after that.

In RE2, William Birkin infects himself with the virus after being shot, he doesn't die, therefore he can't come back to life, therefore not zombies.
        • 0
          HisServant77 Jan 30, 09
But that's one guy. I mean there's always one big bad monster who was inJected with the virus and not inFected.
        • 0
          Hunskelper Jan 30, 09
Yeah but that one guy is enough to prove they aren't zombies.

In the first movie, the scientists at the hive are all infected with the T-Virus right? None of those living, healthy scientists were dead, right?
        • 0
          Seeker X Jan 30, 09
Eh...you wanna go with the movies now? Ok, I'll bite.

If you would remember, all those scientists were executed first by the Red Queen...pretty much skipping all the symptoms and going straight for the reanimation process.
        • 0
          HisServant77 Jan 31, 09
No no, I'm not saying they're ALL zombies. I'm saying that there are zombies. So if any one single beast/monster that you have to kill is a reanimated dead body, then the game contains a zombie. At least, in my thinking.

          And Seeker is exactly right.
        • 0
          Hunskelper Jan 31, 09
I'm going with the whole series canon.

Even if the T-Virus killed some people before turning them into monsters, the fact that some of them didn't die as you said earlier proves that they aren't zombies.
        • 0
          Seeker X Jan 31, 09
Your concept of proof is pretty damn skewed. Resident Evil is pretty diverse in monsters for the very fact that you don't have to be fighting zombies all game long. For some reason, you think that another monster that's not a zombie pretty much denies the existence of the actual zombies...horrible way to argue.
        • 0
          Hunskelper Jan 31, 09
Ok, so what brought these other zombies about if it wasn't the T-Virus?

          Shinobi_razor Feb 1, 09
in RE4 (and probably in 5), the "zombies" (or at least most) have the Las Plagas thingies which is NOT the T-Virus, but some basically unknown mind controlling parasite. some kind of creature the Los Illuminados discovered is all that is known i believe.
