Xboxist recently previewed Microsoft's upcoming MMORPG The Secret World, and they believe it could very well end up being "a definitive 'killer app' for the system.".

There is a lot of buzz right now surrounding Sony's lineup of exclusive games for the Playstation 3, which seems to be enjoying a bit of a comeback. Some people are even proclaiming that 2010 will be "the year of the PS3". We're not quite ready to hand victory over to Sony, and neither is Microsoft. There are a number of interesting upcoming games for the Xbox 360, and one of them could turn out to be a definitive 'killer app' for the system. That game is The Secret World, and it combines massively multiplayer open-world gaming with present day urban mythology. The result is a game that could be captivating to the hard core crowd, while still remaining tempting to new gamers. Provided that it can ship before the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV, The Secret World will also be the first MMORPG on current-gen hardware. Developed by Funcom, the folks behind the successful Age of Conan and Anarchy Online games, there is some serious pedigree behind The Secret World.

Sounds interesting, I'd like to see some gameplay though. And maybe a beta...

You can sign-up for the beta on their website.

I hope the game doesn't have a subscription fee. I love MMOs, but subscription fees are the one thing that keep me away from them.

There's no way in hell my laptop can handle this game, I'm hoping they do what Phantasy Star did with an endless demo server on Live.

I remember the trailer that they had with the creepy Gears Locust/spider mix and was interested in the game. I didn't know it'd be an MMO though. I hope more information starts to come out for this game.

i dont know about killer app. MMOs are not typically killer apps. i dont even consider WOW a killer app, i own a PC and dont play it, and i know lots of others in the same boat.

plus "The Secret World"? sounds like the name of a Disney movie TBH.

About to say. MMOs are probably the riskiest thing to label as one, because even if this game is 'killer-app' worthy, if no one plays it it will just sink to the depths like all other failed MMOs.

yeah, and that said, i read up a bit on the premise of the game and ill admit it does sound like one of the more interesting MMOs ive heard about. its set in an alternate reality Earth, and you can go to real world places like New York City or whatever, except its obviously an alternate version of the real thing. and it mixes a bunch of mythologies like zombies, vampires, werewolves and what other myths you can think of. ill have to hear more about it first.

I read up on it too, I like the sound of the factions wars. Illuminati, Templars and Dragon.

Think I'd go into Templar if I played the game.

yeah the Templars are awesome. i wonder though what the Dragons are?

I took the test they have on their website and got "Dragon". This is what it says in the e-mail they sent me:

          quote
With a spiritual and philosophical approach to the secret crafts, as an acolyte of the Dragon you are taught to listen, shown how to teach others, and expected to respect the balance of the Universe and to be humble in the face of fate. Yours is not the path of force, though force is often needed to clear the path.
I think they use melee weapons, because I remember for one of the questions, you could choose between an SMG, a pistol, or a katana.

That seems to be their symbolic weapon, I'm guessing from character art they've shown. Though they also talked about being able to use magic and magic augmented martial arts.

Personally I'd like... well any kind of european blade as a Templar really.

ok so the Dragons are Neutral alignment it sounds like, and i bet the Templars are Good and Illuminati are considered Evil.

ya im gonna be a Templar and run around with a trench coat and a big bastard sword or a claymore!

It seems to be more of an idealogical approach rather than a good and evil kind of thing.

Templars are the religious, Illuminati are the materialists and Dragons are the spiritualists or naturalists.

Aside from that they have the way they get things done. Templar, are very upfront and brutal in their way of getting things done. Dragon, as it has said, is the most secretive, using networks of assassins and spies. I assume that Illuminati are some kind of middle ground since it doesn't really go into their methods aside from how they treat members and deserters.

If its no sub I'll definately take a look at it.

I refuse to pay a monthly fee in addition to the price of a game.

I have no interest in MMO's because of price and the fact that I would become a zombie like lots of people who play WoW.

So this game is of no interest to me whatsoever.

MMOs aren't for everyone. And within that genre, there are different kinds for different demographics, just like any type of gaming. You shouldn't dismiss an entire genre because of WoW or even Everquest. Just because someone likes WoW, doesn't mean they'll like Guild Wars, and just because someone like Guild Wars, doesn't mean they'll like Warhammer Online, etc. etc. And you only become a "zombie" if you have no drive whatsoever to stop playing. Plenty of people play MMOs but to various degrees of commitment.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to this game. Couple of us at Neoseeker hope to get a preview with the beta.

Is that in response to me?

I'm judging a whole genre on my personality and how addicted I can become to video games.I know that there's a rather big chance that if I play an MMO and enjoy it, my life will go down the crapper.

Oh. Then yes, you should probably stay away from MMOs. XD

That sounds like the world behind White Wolf's Vampire: The Masquerade. It does sound pretty interesting, though I'm curious about how the entire thing is going to be story driven as it says in the article. Surely trying to keep that much story based content in an MMO would just lead to the story becoming lame in no time?

Naw. Wow is pretty story driven.

      So is Guild Wars.

Also was reminded of White Wolf when I first heard of TSW. I'm more into the Eastern Kindred and corresponding hunters myself -- Demon Hunter X!
