Yakuza 3 will finally be crossing the Pacific Ocean on March 9. But first, Sega and Sony have given gamers a taste of the "Grand Theft Auto of Japan" with a PlayStation Store demo. Gaming Target goes hands-on in this preview.

The Yakuza 3 demo is kind of weird – it expects you to have some knowledge of the franchise and doesn't really spend time explaining basic concepts, so newbies might be lost at first. Still, after some adjustment, it shouldn't be too difficult to pick up the simple - yet still deep - controls and kick ass. The franchise is not for everyone; it's very Japanese and Yakuza 3 doesn't really bother to explain these very Japanese things. It expects a basic understanding of what they are, why they're in the game, and why you should care about them.

Yakuza is NOT the grand theft auto of Japan. It is NOTHING like GTA. The game is a beat em up. You go around beating people up, getting money and leveling up, not steal cars and and do drive-by's.

Agreed. I went into the demo expecting to see a Japanese GTA, and was surprised. An open world is the only thing it has in common with GTA.

Exactly, that's the only GTA thing about it, and it's not like GTA is the first game to have open worlds in the first place anyways.
