SMT: Persona 3 - First Look

mettaur_15 | July 07, 2007 | Previews | Playstation 2
The Shin Megami Tensei saga continues. In this title, players assume the role of a high school student that was orphened as a young boy. He recently transferred to Gekkoukan High School on Port Island, where he is attacked by creatures of the night, known as shadows, shortly after arrival. This assault jars awake his subconciously sleeping Persona, Orpheus, allowing him to defeat these monsters.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is really two games bundled into one package. By day you play as a high school student in Gekkukan High. During the dark hour, the school transforms into a labyrinth known as Tartarus and you enter it to fight shadows. I’ve been playing Persona 3 for a little while and it is awesome, one of the best games I have played in a long time. One of the reasons why Persona 3 is great is because it isn’t your standard save the world from oblivion by wandering in caves until you get the next cutscene cookie cutter RPG. Persona 3 is set in modern times and the pace is decided by the player. Since there are two styles of play in Persona 3 it’s going to get two sets of impressions. I never played any of these games, but this one does sound pretty cool. The level of freedom you have and the way you get to interact with other people to build 'social links' is what interests me the most. Maybe there ARE some PS2 games I will still need to buy.

It's this freedom which sets the game apart from the previous Persona games, incidentally. Persona 2 was a more traditional console RPG, and the first game even used a first person perspective for dungeon crawls just like the classic PC RPGs. Seems like character interaction has been kicked up a notch in P3! Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

This is sounding and looking interetsing especially on the area of the freedom that you can have in the game. Though I have never played the ones in the past I might look out for this one.

Never played any of these games but by the looks of it it sounds interesting. I'll keep a look out for this game and maybe get my hands on one of the previous titles if I like it well enough.
