The
Iwata Asks: Super Smash Bros. Brawl interview continues on its merry way, with today's section being about the music in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Music in Brawl is by far
not an oversight. Sora, Ltd. and Brawl Director Masahiro Sakurai are aiming to create what could quite possibly be one of the best videogame soundtracks of all time. With a
star-studded list of musicians lending their talents to this game. It's a who's who of the Japanese video game composer scene:
Koji Kondo,
Nobuo Uematsu,
Motoi Sakuraba, and
Yasunori Mitsuda, just to name a few. Today's Iwata Asks update goes hand-in-hand with today's DOJO update,
First Songs in My Music, which is a
list of all the starting songs in the game.
Today's interview section,
Part 6: All-star Music has the following topics:
Thirty Games Worth of Music
Great Arrangements True to the Original
Only in Smash Bros.
Obviously the main focus is music, talking about the sheer amount of music in this game, along with up to 40,000 requests/feedback, and more information about a couple of songs in the game, namely the Cooking Navi song and the X: Tunnel Scene song.

Thirty Games Worth of Music
Iwata
Let’s talk about music next. The music for the previous Smash Bros. titles was truly amazing, but the music for Smash Bros. Brawl is something else entirely.
Sakurai
You think we went overboard?
Iwata
Maybe just a bit. (laughs)
Sakurai
(laughs)
Iwata
Actually, the department that handles contracts and copyrights said this game has thirty games worth of music.
Sakurai
Wow. Sorry for getting so carried away. (laughs)
Iwata
Naturally the game includes songs from various games, as well as some unexpected collaboration. This made negotiating the rights pretty complicated.
Sakurai
I know it must have been extremely difficult, but because of your efforts, the game will be a blast!
Iwata
Well, I hope the players will enjoy it too. Still, can you tell me how the volume of music swelled to this level?
Sakurai
I’ll try. Traditionally, the music for the Smash Bros. series was produced by musicians taking music from other games and incorporating it into Smash Bros. One song per stage was another fundamental premise. For Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however, we decided to make several songs for each stage. Simply put, we made this change in terms of the increased fan base. Take the Mario games for example. Some of our players have been playing the Mario series since Super Mario Bros. for the NES, while others started playing with the release of the Super NES. Others started playing on the Nintendo GameCube. Therefore, we figured hit songs might differ depending on the player.

It's an impressive list they revealed today, especially since it is just the initial soundtrack and not the full one. I'm really surprised (and happy) to see Masafumi Takada is there. I didn't expect to see him, he only composes for lesser-known games like Killer7, No More Heroes and a few other fairly obscure games. He is quite a talented composer, though. There are quite a few big names there, too, such as Koji Kondo and Yasufumi Fukuda.
