A dedicated fan going under the moniker of DoctorM64 has taken it up on himself to remake the Gameboy's Metroid II: Return of Samus. Some might already know a bit about this, as its been in development for quite some time.

This is awesome news, especially if you're kind of a shallow gamer like me who finds it a struggle to play anything pre-SNES/Genesis era. A gameplay video can be found at the bottom of this post.

[He's] ripped the assets out of Metroid Fusion and used them as a starting point to rebuild the ol' monochrome beep-fest in much the same way Nintendo did for the original Metroid with Zero Mission.

It's Windows-only unfortunately, but judging by the video at the source, it's some impressive work that clearly took a really long time to do. Let's keep in mind that the better this man does, the more likely he is to be shut down with a firmly-worded cease and desist letter. He even points out that he's aware of that on his blog.

Hopefully this thing lands before the C&D arrives or at least if he's feeling the heat he goes and makes it a public archive so that it's beyond their ability to stop. Too many remake titles end up getting chopped off because of general greed about things. It's not like half the companies would actually follow through on a proper conversion anyway.

Probably one of the worst to see was the remake of Chrono Trigger, such a good team behind it for modeling and art and they had to nuke it because of the Square-Enix order.

There are a few providers for the game's tech demo here, between the video and the images. Very impressive work, by the way. I never played Metroid II, but I'm really enjoying the remake. It looks wonderful and plays even better. It makes me wish Nintendo would release a brand-new sidescrolling Metroid through WiiWare.

I was thinking if Nintendo was at all smart, they'd work with him on this and release the game publicly.

Looks good! But it doesn't look like it would be too hard to make. Anyone know what program it's made on? I'm liking the platform movement, especially on the rigid surfaces.
