Nestled in the snowy heart of Nasu, Japan, Konami and Kojima Productions recently held a secret "boot camp" where the companies showed off a nearly complete version of the anticipated PlayStation 3 action-epic Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Only a handful of gaming insiders were invited, but GamePro was there to get exclusive access to an enormous portion of the game. This is our report, complete with extensive hands-on impressions.

Man I don't even want to hear about this game right now. I don't want to get myself even more anxious since its still a couple months away. GTA is coming out at the perfect time.

I heard from another hands-on that MGS4 suffers from framerate drops and no anti-aliasing. Hopefully it's untrue.

I'm always surprised to know that those pictures, as well as many others, are in-game. The character models are very well-done. All cutscenes are also done using in-game footage, which is especially astounding considering the quality.

MGS has never used CGI, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

Yes, but this is on the PS3 now; plus I've never played an MGS game before. Either way, it's still impressive.

Yes, its the PS3, so that should be even more incentive to use the in game engine. How many games these days use CGI cut scenes?

I'm not sure, to be honest. Some use in-game engines and you don't even realize it.

Gears suffers from framerate drops too, as does just about any FPS or TPS. It's the nature of the genre. When you have games where explosions and particle effects are going off all the time, it's very possibly that you end up running into an instance in the game where there are just that extra explosion or extra smoke effect that causes the framerate to drop a bit.

It's understandable in these genres just as long as it doesn't happen every 5 minutes.

True enough. It's just that for some reason, especially with PS3 games, critics tend to point out framerate drops like it's the end of the world (and usually dock marks for it).

As of yet, there's only one game I have that suffers from framerate issues, and that's Assassin's Creed; and even then it's never got in my way.

So today I went into GameStop to upgrade my reservation from the regular MGS4 copy to the Limited Edition, and lo and behold they had the MGS4 Pre-Order supplements in. So I got my Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2 dvd and my MGSO Beta code and all that cool stuff.

The game looks neat! I hope to get it when it comes out , I really like the game title too , yet the picture on the gamebox looks unappealing.
