Every once in a long while, a game will come along and change all the rules. Final Fantasy VII transformed the RPG genre, Resident Evil helped create a new sub-category of gaming--survival horror--and Grand Theft Auto III single-handedly reshaped the gaming landscape.

And now comes Metal Gear Solid 4, a game whose potential influence on the current state of gaming is nothing short of tectonic.

Is it just me or is this review score impossible? They give it a perfect 5/5 but they list cons to the game. How can a game be perfect but have bad aspects to it?

Well nothing is perfect. The score does not reflect that the game is LITERALLY perfect, just that the game is so good that its flaws are easily overlooked and is almost flawless. Or it can also mean how much they were entertained by the game and not the games quality.

5/5, 10/10, even 100% doesn't mean a game is "perfect," its only an average score of the basic elements of every game, i.e graphics, gameplay, sound, etc. If a game is an astonishment like MGS4, but it has minor camera issues [hypothetical] then that isn't anything worth soiling the overall score.

5/5 or 100% should mean that there is nothing you hated about the game because if you give it 100% it can't get any better.

What happens if the developer comes along and releases a patch that fixes what you thought was a con and now you love the ability? Are you going to give it a 5.1 out of 5?

5/5, 10/10, 100% are perfect scores because they can't get any higher. You can never amend the score and make it better. Unless you find absolutely no cons to the game, which this reviewer did, you can't say the game is perfect. Even if it is just the tiniest little thing wrong then the game isn't worth a perfect score. Give it a 99.99999999999% or whatever but don't give it 100% if 100% of the game isn't perfect.

          I don't think it's a really big deal.
The game is good enough to garner a 5/5. As iLL mentioned, the cons obviously aren't big enough to lower the score, so they deem it "perfect" (or as close to "perfect" as a game can be).

Giving games a score like 99.999999% is just annoying. Just give it 100% and be done with it. Most people can figure out that 100% doesn't neccessarily mean "perfection at it's best".

Thats not how the scoring work. Its just opinions to them, and the positives far outweight the negatives to THEM.
Those scores doesn't reflect thats its perfect just that its awesome at the time of release. Take GTA4, it got 10s across the board and everyone gave it a 8.5. Does that make it a perfect game? NO CAUSE ITS STUPID OPINIONS.
Thats why pro reviews suck cause it doesn't do anything.
iLLmatic is 100% correct in what he says. User reviews is what makes the game.

I don't get it. Did you even read what I said?

Yes iLLmatic I read what you said and I may not have been clear in my response. You say that 5/5, 10/10, 100% aren't perfect scores and are just averages based on gameplay. I don't see how they aren't perfect scores. A score that isn't perfect can still go higher. If the score can't get any higher then that means it is perfect. If the person listed cons to the game then that means the score should be able to go higher if those were fixed.

What if there was another Metal Gear Solid to come out and it didn't have a single thing wrong about it? What are you going to give it? Another 5/5? How can a game with cons get the exact same score as a game that you believe was perfect.

If the score was a true average of different aspects of the game then there is no possible way it could get 5/5 as one section would be lower because of the con. If you had 10 categories that you graded the game on and 9 got 5/5 and one got 4.9/5 then when you average them you aren't going to get a 5/5, unless you use mode to do it.

Who honestly didn't think MGS4 won't be one of the best games of all time?
Its freaking 50GB worth of data, its bound to be the shit.

      Fatal Error May 28, 08
There are plenty of ways that 50GB of data could not be the shit. That's pretty piss-poor reasoning on your part.

Oh sorry I forgot to say coming from a great developer known as Kojima who makes quality games.

          Fatal Error May 28, 08
Eh, that's a bit more reasonable. The only problem I can foresee as far as the general population being concerned is how confusing Kojima tends to make all of his games. It'll probably knock a bit on sales but that's not something most of us should be concerned about.

GamePro also called R6V2 "The Perfect Shooter" and we all know that R6V2 is basically an expansion. Pretty hard to take GamePro's word on somethings really.

MGS4 sure has shaped up to be a masterful game, and most certainly will join the ranks of GTA4 and Brawl for game of the year. I wouldn't go around saying it's one of the greatest games of all time just yet, I would wait until it has been out for a bit before comparing it to the legendary games of the past. But with that it will definitely be top of the ranks for its genre.

With this and GTA4, it is nice to see that the PS3's game library is starting to bloom.

I never figured out how the goodness of something could be measured in a numeric score.

Enhance, I didn't say just gameplay. There are many different aspects of a game to grade. The score itself may be perfect, but that doesn't mean the game is perfect. A perfect score is not inherently reserved for a perfect game. Thats just how it is. You can argue that it doesn't make sense, but thats not going to change how it works. Bottom line is, if a game is that good to ignore something so trivial as a minor graphical hiccup, then the graphics are still going to get a 5/5, you get it?

Besides, all these reviews don't mean anything at the end of the day. People are going to buy the games that they want. This is all just for the media and for the people who can't make their own decisions. These scores are just opinions like yours and mine. They aren't laws that are written in stone.

Also, not all review sites/magazines use averages. They just use individual scores.
