Metal Gear Solid 4's Metacritic score: 93/100

Gothic Girl | June 10, 2008 | Reviews | Playstation 3
Metal Gear Solid 4 has been recieving some fantastic reviews lately. Just take a look at Metacritic and you will see that the average rating of the game is 93/100.
The main complaint with MGS4 is that it might not meet every fan's expectations. But that's only natural for a game as well hyped as this one.
But nevertheless, the general consensus is that most players will have a great time with MGS4.

Here's a look at what various reviewers had to say...
Gamepro (100/100): The Playstation 3 finally gets its "savior", Kojima gets his masterpiece, and gamers get one of the best games of all time.

IGN (99/100): "If you've ever loved any one of the Metal Gear games, or any moments from the series, there will come a moment when MGS 4 will send your spirits soaring. If you've loved them all, well then there'll be many, many more. It's a masterpiece."

Maxi Consolas (95/100): Metal Gear Solid 4 is a work of passion by Hideo Kojima. Often touching the line between genius and madness, he manages to build a truly epic ending to one of the most essential series in videogames history. Improving most of the elements from the previous titles, MGS 4 is a unique piece by its conception and nature, which rightly deserves the love of fans and the respect of all players.

IGN AU (95/100)" But where MGS4 really succeeds is in delivering an experience unlikely to ever be surpassed by Kojima ever again, providing fans everything they want to see, twists you won’t expect and more raw, lavish creativity than the video gaming medium probably deserves.

Edge Magazine (80/100): "MGS4 is not the game it could have been; nor is it the game it would have been had the series grown with the benefit of hindsight; nor is it the game it should have been if you believed that early trailer. But it is faithful to its fans, its premise and its heart, delivering an experience that is, in so many ways, without equal."

Edge Magazine seems to be pretty harsh in their criticism, especially considering the say it's "faithful to its fans, its premis and its heart, delivering an experience that is, in so many ways, without equal."

Strange you'd give a game that offers an experience "without equal" an 80/100, lol.

Edge don't generally give many reviews higher that 80/100 that is like their top score, unlike other publications that are happy to devalue their ratings system for a hyped game.

I was unaware of this. I'm not really familiar with most "professional review" sites though so I guess that'd explain why.

its really pointless saying what the metacritic average for mgs4 is right now. the 93 is only based on 11 reviews the last mgs score was based on nearly 60 reviews and most big gaming sites have agreed they won't release their reviews until the 12th.

So at the moment this score is worthless as it could easily go up or down, its too soon to be quoting metacritic scores

It is still good to have something in the archives, i mean if it goes down by a lot, lots of people that do serious research are going to want to know when its score piqued, and currently it is at its highest.

Let's hope it doesn't go down any further though.

I gotta admit, I'm a little surprised that MGS4 is getting lower scored reviews than the average "super hyped" game. I don't know if anyone else feels the same way, but I'm getting the impression that alot of reviews are giving off the vibe of "it's a fantastic game, but not quite what fans were expecting". I just hope I enjoy the game once I play it and don't leave disappointed.

I think its more MGS4 isn't as over hyped as other big titles (eg Halo, Brawl) Konami don't do big advertising campaigns or a press release for every little detail. They sell the game for what it is. Like it or not reviewers are subject to hype like everybody else
