Too Human, the Next Daikatana? A Review

JelalTrueshot | August 23, 2008 | Reviews | XBOX 360
GamingShogun reviews Too Human and rips it a new one, calling it out for its shoddy gameplay balancing, camera system, horrifically long death sequences. Too Human is a third-person actioner that has been in development for many years and was recently released for the Xbox 360 platform to generally mild reviews.
The talented guys at Silicon Knights are not a bunch of nuggets. They and their QA people (if there were any) should have noticed these glaring issues. Instead, we are treated to what is one of the most annoying games you will have played in the last five years. Its not only annoying because of its flaws, but because as a veteran gamer I can see what this game SHOULD have been. Silicon Knights completely dropped the ball on this one. Too Human is one of those titles which should be a balls to bone cash cow. You can see that there used to be some genius underneath the wonky elements but they just don't shine through. I believe Too Human will go down in gaming history as one of the worst disappointments since Daikatana.

Too Human isnt THAT bad, certainly not as bad as Daikatana, that game was just........ ugh.... Too Human has its flaws, but can still turn out to be an enjoyable game.

The controls, frankly, just suck. That is probably the worst thing I found about it, so far. Nevermind the cameras, the gun controls were just weird, there's combinations of special moves which you don't even wanna be bothered to perform...pretty armors are shiny though...

I've put about 25 hours into Too Human so far and the controls become second nature. They are definitely not the most accessible... but they work once you learn them.

I could say the same thing about Lair.

          Touche.

The thing that makes Too Human so appealing though is the fact that you zig zag between wave after wave of enemy gathering loot and making your character more and more of a badass.

Well I would hope so, being an RPG and everything. Though Mass Effect manages to address the whole Sci-Fi/RPG thing a LOT better, immersive storyline and all. It's really hard for Too Human to actually get accepted when the gameplay has not only been done before but it already has been made better...good move on the online co-op anyways.

Too Human's gameplay is pretty original. Perhaps a lot of people misunderstand what exactly you're supposed to do and how efficient using the control sticks can be for attacking.

Too Human's storyline is actually a LOT better than I expected. I went in with low expectations but it's above average. Not to mention any fan of Norse mythology will find how SK crafted the gods pretty awesome.

Mass Effect is story driven. Too Human's focal point is the gameplay and loot system.

It's pretty hard to call it original when games like Diablo or Untold Legends have done the exact same thing. The exclusive qualities that the game has, like the story with Norse mythology, that's up for individual taste...terms of gameplay, there's really no debate that it could've been done a lot better.

The game has hack n' slash gameplay but doesn't take advantage of tried and true hack n' slash controls. The game has gun gameplay but does not take advantage of shooter tried and true controls...I could go on. What it does do right is the things like the armors, weapons, runes, etc.

Actually the current game has been in development for only three years.

      Nice try though.

It has been in development, in some form, since 1999 when it was originally announced for the PS1.

And since then it has been cancelled, re started, cancelled and moved around on about 4 platforms. The game that is out today has been developed for 3 years.

    For comparison @ Metacritic.

    Lair: 53 out of 100.
    Haze: 55 out of 100

Too Human: 68 out of 100.

Theres bound to be a few more Too Human reviews though, so we'll see.

Watching NeoGAF vs. Dennis Dyack is funnier though.
