Silent Hill: Homecoming In-depth review!

Daigoji_Gai | September 30, 2008 | Reviews | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
Adam Rosenberg of UGO.com's Gamesblog sounds off with this well written and in-depth review for Silent Hill: Homecoming. From the sound of it, this may be the best Silent Hill game to date!
In Homecoming Double Helix have crafted an experience which is a uniquely modern take on survival horror, incorporating now-standardized game elements such as 3D camera controls and smooth character interactions into the genre’s basic tenets, bending them where necessary but never breaking them outright. In Homecoming, fear comes from keeping players in a constant state of high tension, achieved through combination of deft level and art design, unsettling audio cues and perfectly paced proceedings. In short, this latest Silent Hill, new developer and all, is at once a return to form and a bold step in a new direction.

This is a positive review to read. But the reviewer has only played Origins to compare it to, so I hope it is as quality as he says it is.

Nice review though my biggest issue with it is:

It doesn’t hurt at all that Homecoming’s graphics rank among the best of what’s available right now. The incredible levels of detail in both the environments and the creatures which inhabit them are highly effective in giving our imaginations fewer blanks to fill.
I find that extremely hard to believe...

Daigoji_Gai, its probably sounds like the best Silent Hill to date because the reviewer has only played Origins. The reviewer has not played Silent Hill 1, 2, 3, 4. He says so in his comment he submits afterwards.

true. i will be surprised if Homecoming comes even close to the masterpiece of silent hill 2 or 3. Homecoming looks like it copies the previous game ideas too much to be the best in the series.

Just got 6.7 on IGN review. Such a shame.

I'm actually surprised. IGN complained about bad gameplay mechanics, predictable plot twists, and toned down horror compared to the last games.

The reviews are EXTREMELY mixed according to the Silent Hill forums I've been viewing. There's even one forum with a thread titled "Why can't any of the reviews seem to agree on much of anything!?". Almost every review seems to contradict another. I've read a couple who thought the plot twists were unpredictable and thought it was the scariest of the series. Also what I found interesting was how IGN complained there were too much ammo and weapons, where as gamerpro said the ammo was very limited. Also may I remind the guy who reviewed Homecoming on IGN is not the same guy who reviewed the past Silent Hill games. So really, I wouldn't rely on reviews with this game.

I've just finished reading various other reviews on the internet. Whilst they are not as well known or established review sites or reviewers, their writing style eclipses that of the bloody IGN reviewer. The IGN review felt like a high school paper, which, whilst good, really did not contain the wide array of statistical and anallitical materials one would want in a review.

But 6.7 score from IGN is a fair score. Ive seen a few "B" scores and "8.5" "8.4". Silent Hill games have become very hit and miss with many a reviewer regardless. This could still be a good solid title. I just hope people have the sense to stick with the research on the title before anyone makes any uninformed desicion as whether or not to buy it.

The problem is, IGN and gamespot reviews are nothing sort of BS anyway. I've grown tired of them within my time with those sites. Which is why im on here.

Anyway I have a feeling this game will be great and fun for me. So im going to test it first with a rent.
