What is it that makes this game one of the all time greats? SlapStic.com presents this take on the game, which goes in depth with a description of what the game is, what it does SO right, and what sorts of things happen when you play it.

At one point, while playing with 3 friends, we got into a situation where we had to defend ourselves in a small, two-story house from an unending wave of zombies for 10 minutes while a rescue helicopter was on its way. All four of us got inside an enclosed staircase with two men covering the door at the top and two covering the door at the bottom. One player on both ends of the staircase squatted down while firing, so that the person behind them had a clear shot. Any stray bullet that hits a teammate DOES deplete their health, so we weren't taking any chances. Our team was fairing well for the first five minutes, fending off wave after wave of the infected with little problem. Unfortunately, our good luck didn't last, as the two guys covering the entrance to the top of the staircase reported with genuine terror that a Tank was thundering towards their position. The two abandoned their positions, sprinting downstairs and into the living room, where one was pinned by a waiting Hunter, and another was mobbed by over a dozen infected. The guy that had been with me at the bottom of the staircase began attempting to blow away the attackers using a shotgun, in an effort to free his two friends.

    *sigh*

Here we go with this stupid "this is the greatest [insert theme] game ever made!" stuff...

R2 has a co-op mode where everyone relies on everyone else for something, tied with some form of story, but I guess that wasn't good enough. Slap "zombies and 360" onto it and it's the greatest ever made...

You left out "one of" Red 9. Changing it to fit your perspective is exactly what the press does, except they do it to try and control us.

This is a Valve game, and not one of their games have disappointed me...waiting for the holidays to purchase this for myself and three relatives.

Yeah... don't intentionally misquote me to get your point across better, Red.

The site doesn't say it is *the* greatest game ever made, they say it is "one of the" meaning, it's not the greatest but it's high up there on the list.

I actually agree with the reviewer. L4D is actually a really good game. One of the best in its genre, being an multiplayer FPS. I can't think of an FPS that relies on team work so much. You absolutely cannot go rambo and try to solo it alone, you must rely on your teammates.

I agree, this game provides me with some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game, it rightfully deserves the praise.

I disagree, Burnout Paradise is far better multiplatform game of all time then this one.

      Multiplayer, not multiplatform CFB

Oh wait, I guess I didn't state I was also talking about multiplayer for the game too.

I disagree with your disagreement purely on the basis that you didn't read the article, or, comprehend what it was about.

+1 cookie for Deathsythe on pointing out the key difference in your disagreement.

I've been playing this game for far too any hours since I've bought it, it is one of the best multiplayer shooters that I have played, and certainly the best this year.

The Teamwork that is required to succeed is unbelievable.

/agree - I just stopped a 48-hour Fable 2 binge (needed to make a dent in that game) and my game of choice in-between breaks was Left 4 Dead. So good. So much fun. I think you may be interested in the story I'm about to post about the PC version.

I must agree - not one of the greatest of "all time", but definately one of the better multiplayer experiences of 2008... Horde mode in GoW comes in second.

Funny you should mention. I installed L4D and then went to play Horde Mode. It seems to use the same idea as L4D (minus friendly fire, thank goodness)... and I can honestly say...

      I love Horde mode!

It can be really fun but it involves a lot of teamwork, something most people aren't willing to do online.

That's why you go in with friends, or you just play Versus mode and treat it like a deathmatch with objectives.

The only poor experience I've had so far with random people was some little 9yo kid who kept running off by himself. I told him not to run off but he did and of course ended up getting pounced on by a hunter...which I then stood over him and watched while he was torn to shreds while telling him "told you so" ;D of course, I did save him in the end but only because I didn't want to be down one person :

That is my only problem with these games - whether it is Horde mode on Gears2 or any gameplay mode in L4D. You have players that hop in and decide to run off and get themselves killed. I try to be an all inclusive gamer - and despite very mature (without hate) calls by my other 2 friends and I for the guy to stick together, he kept trying to play rambo.

We got to the point where we gave up on him and let him die... The othe rproblem arose when we had someone join our infected team. We were camping out on a rooftop (decided not to bother them while they were in the building starting point of No Mercy) and the fool decides to start attacking us, all of us fell off the roof trying to vote him out and into the gunfire of the human players.

So yeah, if you can play with your friend son the same team these games are great- when you are stuck with randoms that want to ruin the game for everyone except themselves (I am sure these players were having fun griefing) it sucks... *sigh*

Thankfully, I have a larger group of people on the friends list playing Horde than L4D, so I haven't encountered it there yet.

Along those lines, sometimes you have to think for the greater good of the party. It would be more beneficial sometimes to leave one member to die than to risk the lives of the rest of the members by attempting to save or rescue him.

Just, Go play Halo or Cock of Doody. Those are the best shooters out, in my opinion. Resistance 2 is rather fun, if you have a PS3.
