Gaming Verdict brings you the latest review of Left 4 Dead - will you survive the zombie apocalypse?
Vir Lucis looks at one of the most anticipated games of the holiday season, and as usual at Gaming Verdict the good is placed beside the bad to answer the question - does it live up to the hype?
As a long-time George Romero fan (the original Dawn of the Dead is officialy my favourite film of all time), I was amongst those salivating over the prospect of a zombie apocalypse game from Valve. Since the first previews anticipation has been high, and now that the game has finally shipped I've been doing little else with my spare time other than blowing away the undead with various forms of high powered weaponry. So, is the game everything a zombie fan dreams of? Well, it certainly gets as close as any game that comes to mind - but that's not to say that there aren't some problems with this recent effort that means that it falls short of being as great as the previews and hype may have led us to believe.

The zombie AI isn't "bad," and you seemed to contradict your previous statement when you suggested L4D, being a Valve title, should hold some level of quality. No, the zombies don't form complex battle plans behind the abandoned convenience store or create fortifications (etc.) like humans, but they swarm as zombies will, and there are different types of zombies to keep things interesting. That, coupled with the co-op aspect, requires you to actually do some thinking, because you can't exactly rely on blind fire to survive. Not to mention the spawns aren't exactly the same after each spawn -- like Slumpy said, the randomly generated mobs adds quite a bit to the game.
The focus is really on multiplayer (I know you said you don't care about that), so you should really look at it as such. The team even stated before they had started out with cutscenes and a cohesive story, but after play testing, opted for the short sessions broken into sections independent of each other (sort of). They felt storytelling got in the way of what they wanted to do, and the replayability.
When people knock L4D for the brevity of its solo/campaign mode, they might as well be saying Team Fortress 2 sucks because it has no plot... or calling MGS4 an inferior game because it's too long.
Also, only a 1 hour and 20 mins story?? WTF?
You people don't even understand how the game works, or how it is supposed to play, so stop crapping all over it saying stuff like "It doesnt desrve its hype" when it does and it is one of the best games released this year.
Not all games need a story. Why dont you got shit all over LBP for hardly having a story? I guess that doesn't deserve its hype either huh?
But I'm with Slumpy on this one...but what do you mean "you people?" (I just had to. xD) I've only played the demo, but will surely get this game off Steam soon as finals are done. The focus isn't really about the story, but the level of teamwork and style it has makes it damn enjoyable. Some games have weak stories but good MP, like...Halo. Others are vice-versa, currently like Gears 2 (they need to fix that match-making bit, if they haven't already).
Spread the love people.
Where'd all this *bleep* anti-Left 4 Dead attitude come from? Play the goddamn demo and there's no way you won't have fun. Otherwise stop trying so hard to think of reasons why you blindly hate it.
It's all my opinion afterall just like it is your opinion to love the game, i am just one person and apparently i am on my own in disliking it, so why the *bleep* do you care so much, i don't like it, it really shouldn't effect any of you this much.
When pretty much every single other person that's played the game loves it and it's getting reviews regularly above 9's, you ever think that the reason why you can't "see why" is becuase you've, I don't know.... never touched the game, let alone ever looked at it? Or is that a cahrazy idea?
"Bad zombie AI" /proof he has no *bleep*ing idea.
In terms of zombies, might as well call this game 28 Days/Weeks Later if it wasn't for some of the putrid Special Infected zombies. It's pretty pathetic to call them zombies but I guess it's just better if people keep ripping off Dawn of the Dead with zombies wanting to beat the hell out of you instead of eating you...
Campaign is brilliant with friends, random people are such idiots. They leave you to die, alert the horde at every moment, and *bleep*n *bleep*ing the witch over and over to get us all killed.
Otherwise, this game is one of Valve's best, Downloadable Ravenholm campaign pl0x :3
Ok how about this, "I hate this freaking game cause you and slumpy loves it"
Hows that?
Oh no, Slumpy and I think it's kind of dumb to hate a game you know nothing about. We're awful. I know. But I'd appreciate it if you just left some of your thoughts inside for once.
Man, i'm going to assume you're mentally unstable.
Jesus Christ...
I can understand how some of you feel though. Yeh it is a little short. Matter of taste I guess.
