Console RTS games haven't hit it big yet. Creative Assembly now hop to create the first successful RTS, mainly tailored for console, but did it work? Check our review to find out...
The Creative Assembly didn’t have a huge impact on next generation consoles when it launched its first inspired title for the PS3 and 360, Viking: Battle of Asgard. Though the concept was perfect, along with the setting and other well laid foundations, the execution was a little lacklustre, including a monotonous combat system that tried to shed some diversity, but unfortunately became another hack n’ slash for the pile. It was a big dip for the developers, being the only games they had ever made before Viking were the Total War games, each praised as the best bit of RTS action you will get on a PC. However, after Viking’s slight tumble, they have returned to their Real Time Strategy roots, with Stormrise.
Most genres don’t usually tie themselves into being related to one gaming system only, but apart from all current genres available, Real Time Strategy and MMORPGs are solely chained to the PC. Don’t get me wrong, recently there has been a great influx of console RTS games including Halo Wars, Red Alert and Stormrise, but the common burden they face amongst critics, is that they don’t fare well as compared to their PC versions. However, I find this statement pretty unfair, beings developers are specifically moulding these games to make “Console RTSs” so they should be valued differently from their PC versions just for the fact they are trying to make it big on other consoles too.
