With the release of THQ's UFC Undisputed, speculations are arising about the level of competition that will exist between the UFC and WWE games. This should provide for better, more in depth games in the future. UFC Undisputed reviewed.

UFC is one of the fastest growing sports in this country. There has been a flood rush of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters over the past two years and between Pride and UFC, now mainstream America is getting in on the action.

When they're developed by the exact same studio and the quality is so different between the two series?

The only way WWE Smackdown vs Raw could compete with the level of UFC 2009: Undisputed is if they rebooted the Smackdown vs Raw brand and started from the ground up. Realism is the aim of the game here and TV like presentation pays dividends when done right. Smackdown vs Raw has been lacking this and the fact many of it's match types look nothing like the live counterpart is a huge flaw. There are numerous differences between the Hell in a Cell in the game and the real one, Ladder matches normally have numerous ladders and other weapons. These are all match types that if executed right could work but they would need to take up to 2 years out and totally rework the entire game. Overall it is competition but to be honest EA should be more worried as MMA is a closer rival to boxing and it's Fight Night brand.

Do you think that this is the first step of a SVR complete makeover? Maybe establishing UFC as the new big ticket for THQ so they can afford to revamp SVR completely? Or do you just think that SVR is a lost cause?

I think perhaps if they get it right UFC may be a fast track to getting a wrestling game we deserve. They could spend a few years just releasing UFC and no Smackdown vs Raw, though one other possibility is use the UFC engine to power the next generation of Smackdown vs Raw leaving them only to work on getting the match types and the gameplay right. Whatever they do it has to be done as other than changing the control scheme Smackdown vs Raw still uses the same basic fundamentals Smackdown used in 1998.
