Hey there everyone. Here's Neoseeker's review for the just-released Space Invaders Extreme 2 for the Nintendo DS. Do yourself a favor and give a good little game the attention it deserves.
Extra special thanks to RabidChinaGirl for making it readable in the first place! :P
Last year, Taito released Space Invaders Extreme to celebrate the original Space Invader's 30th anniversary, and the developers managed to update the original game, enduring that after three decades, the series keeps its formula while taking on a new, reinvigorating feeling. While it didn’t sell so well outside of Japan, SIE managed to garner enough attention to warrant a sequel; Taito tried once again. Space Invaders Extreme 2 attempts to fine tune what was in the original while preserving the same gameplay and still keep things fresh.
If you somehow never heard of Space Invaders (which you need a good scolding for), here’s a brief summary; you play as a cannon locked to moving left and right while having four protective barriers. Your goal is to take out the entire formation of invaders before they touch the ground, while UFOs randomly appear for bonus points. As you continue taking out more invaders, the formation gradually increases in speed and difficulty. If you take a hit or let an invader through, the game ends.
Space Invaders Extreme 2 still has those same invaders trying to head to the bottom while attacking the player. However, instead of a single formation per stage, you face off against multiple waves of invaders and encounter a boss at the end, which must be defeated to move on. There are five stages in a session but these stages can expand depending on your difficulty setting. Regardless of which "paths" you take, the difficulty remains pretty balanced, with "easy" stages still offering some level of challenge. If you want to go all out, the harder difficulties are perfect.
