The guys at Famitsu magazine apparently got their hands on Final Fantasy XIII and they were impressed, giving it an almost perfect score of 39/40.

Beautiful graphics and superb story. These aspects can be enjoyed without feeling as though they're being forced upon you. Combined with this, the extreme sense of satisfaction from the gameplay, is a direct result of a system that's evolved and reached perfection.
With no vice to really speak of, at this time, this game stands at the RPG forefront of a superb combination of story and gameplay who's value can undoubtedly be experienced by all.

Reviewer 2 - 9/10
There's a few niggling issues like battle damage being difficult to see, and the screen being cluttered, but the amount of enjoyment this game offers more than makes up for it. You'll be drawn into the world with visual, aural, and story aspects. I have a bit of resistance calling this an "RPG-like RPG" however.

Are you....are you implying that Famitsu isn't neutral?

Good point. Why imply when we already know.

Interestingly, after my last blog entry discussing how Japanese publishers sometimes have to submit their reviews to companies for approval I got an email from an editor who works for a Japanese magazine publisher who said that it's completely common -- and that they most definitely have to apologize in person for negative ones.

Given Famitsu years ago was notorious for its tough scoring, it's not hard to paint the full picture -- they are bribed in one way or another.

Well Famitsu is god awful at rating games so let's hope this isn't a bad sign.

Yeah Famitsu has very ...."diverse" ratings.

No way nintendogs is better than this game...

You seriously thought this review was suggesting that Nintendogs is better than Final Fantasy XIII?

        dwg14390 Dec 9, 09
No, I was looking at his previous reviews.

Wasn't Famitsu a really hardcore reviewer back then who only gave a perfect score to games truly deserving and even then extremely rare?

But now most of his games are within the 35-perfect score areas.

I think to this day, there's 13 games with perfect scores from them. The latest being both from this year with Monster Hunter Tri and 360 version of Bayonetta.

Thing is some of these scores from him are just..."off"....

The reviewer who gave a 9, or the magazine as a whole?

I don't read much into ratings, I'll form my own opinion when I play through the game myself thanks.

These are also the people who gave Haze a 39/40 and then gave White Knight Chronicles a 29/40. I've stopped using them as a reference. Plus, since when was FFXIII even finished?

Plus, who the hell does scores out of 40 anyway?

      FFXIII releases next week.

Also, the 40 comes from 4 reviewers scoring out of 10.

In Japan, of course. Forgot how soon the JP release was

I still think their scoring system is stupid. They ought to have just one person reviewing the game, not four. I suppose it helps center on real problems and not just personal beefs, but soemtimes four people can complain about completely different things.

It's next to impossible to have one person be completely unbiased in matters of entertainment. Multiple reviewers is probably the fairest system a game could get.

Plus, think of it this way. Three out of Four people think it's perfect while the fourth isn't exactly far off, his complaint being that he doesn't like the battle HUD.

They gave FFXII a perfect score.

I don't know. I'm very neutral/undecided about this game. Not sure if I want to invest my time in a brand new FF game like I did with the others. FFXII really took a lot out of me...but what a ride.

I want to read more reviews and read user reviews before I get it, if I get it.

It's entirely possible only one person actually reviews a given game -- this has happened with some publications, too.

Sort of expected . It's FF XIII guys. IT's going to get all sorts of %95+ / %100+ ratings.
