Nowgamer.com's fluent Japanese-speaking Ryan Winterhalter recently reviewed Final Fantasy XIII. Despite giving the game a 7.9/10 he admitted that it didn't live up to the hype, and said: "while individual aspects work well and give motivation to keep playing, other aspects fall flat."
He praised the "entertaining" characters, but was disappointed with the scenarios they were placed in and the villains who failed to "invoke any of the strong emotions that previous antagonists in the Final Fantasy canon, like Kefka or Sephiroth, have."
Winterhalter also enjoyed the combat system and loved the "exquisitely detailed architecture and structural design" of the environments, but despite this "it doesn't feel like a real place" and was akin to "navigating characters through a movie set."

Ultimately, the rest of the game suffers from similar problems. The characters are engaging and interesting, but the scenarios they're placed in fail to engage the player. The environments are beautiful and detailed, but this art feels like little more than wallpaper thrown over a tunnel that players walk through. It's clear that Square Enix has some of the most talented artists and designers in the industry working for it. Where this game stumbles, where other Final Fantasy games succeeded, was in taking the talents of these people and synthesising them into a single whole that's greater than the sum of its parts.
A game that never comes together properly. However, the certain individual aspects of the game and its battle system are of such high quality that it’s still engaging and fun to play... most of the time.

FF12 was not the best game in the series, but it was certainly an enjoyable experience still. With a very interesting world, in fact the thing I disliked most was the art style. Not my cup of tea, but I appreciated it even still.
And god, don't get me started on 12. I liked the battle system, but i didn't give a toss about any of the protagonists in it, and from memory i couldn't even tell you the name of villian, if it even had one. All i want is FF12 with the story telling of 6-10 and i'm happy.
Fail Square Enix, total and utter Fail!
Kojima would never do this! =D
I know next to nothing about Mass Effect 2 and Final Fantasy XIII and I'm willing to bet I'm going to have a GREAT time because I don't have ANY expectations other than it's going to be an enjoyable experience. I've already played FFXIII and I enjoyed it.
When you start hearing bits of storyline and stuff it's impossible not to make expectations out of those details.
All this FFXIII stuff is just fuel for the fire, people wanting attention and the easiest way to get that attention is to say negative things about something people are positive about in a big way. Humanity is always fascinated with the letdown. Funny thing is, if I had a website right now, I could probably get attention by addressing all the things in the other reviews and write a glowing review about how all those guys don't know how to just relax and have fun with what they have and not whine about what they don't. There have been so many "sub par" reviews that if I wrote a glowing one right now I'd get huge amounts of attention.
Need I remind you this is gamegrep, where we scower the internet for the most useless sources of videogame journalism. Even down to the article writers and website owners submitting their own content.
As I said in another article, or thread, with all this FFXIII bashing going around to get attention, it's almost 'more original' to actually write a good review on it. I mean come on, this guy gave the game a 7.9/10 yet the title is 'Disappointment which fails to live up to the hype'. Seriously, these reviewers need to start thinking for themselves, and stop going along with the over-quipped, negative reviewing styles we've seen pop up as of late.
Some reviewers will bag out almost everything about a game, then give it a 9/10. While others will say the game is perfection, but give it an 7/10.
I like reading reviews for the info on the game itself: what's the story like, are the graphics any good, how's the gameplay, etc. It gives us insight into the actual game before we play it. That's more valuable than random a score, imo.
The rating better be accurate. If a score doesn't properly reflect the written word it's a worthless review. Simple.
I mean reviewers and people blasted FFXII but it wasn't THAT bad, it wasn't great but it was still fun to play.
So bring on March and lets see what FFXIII has to bring.
Which is a shame, I have been waiting for this title for a few years now. Still, some will love it to bits and I advise people to know read too many negative reviews before you play it.
I guess I had my expectations way too high. Just doesnt do it for me. Need to "keep my head in the sand" more often with games like this.
Maybe the characters make it 10x more intesting? I will pick up the English version, when its on sale.
Technically, many good games are "disappointments" since few live up to actual hype.
But you're still here!
If vs is a knock out i could see them handin 15 over to Nomura (which might cause some peoples head 2 explode, most notably Shuyu).
