The Greatest Platformer Ever? - Super Mario Galaxy IGN Review

twilightprince | November 07, 2007 | Reviews | Wii
Super Mario Galaxy is only a few days away, and according to IGN, the wait was totally worth it. We've finally found the true successor to Super Mario 64.

IGN is raving about this game, calling it the 'Wii's best looking game' and 'Wii's best game overall', and even going as far as saying its 'the greatest Nintendo platformer ever made'. It received an overall score of 9.7/10.

IGN has high praise for both the graphics and music. "Meanwhile, the music, much of which is fully orchestrated, is absolutely superb -- some of the best in any Nintendo game to date"

In short, Super Mario Galaxy is a must-buy title for every Wii owner.
Super Mario Galaxy is one of the greatest platformers I have ever played, Wii's best game, and an absolute must-own experience. And to me, this odd trek through space really does feel like the true sequel to Mario 64. It harkens back to the N64 classic with nostalgic faces and places from the Mushroom Kingdom, but it also re-invents the franchise with new space-themed mechanics and fresh Wii-enhanced controls. It is, as I have said since I first played it, a near-perfect combination of old platforming values and new design.

Except to be blown away by the fantastic level challenges and galactic variety. Expect to be blown away by the addictive gravity effects -- you will jump off ledges just to see if you can rotate all the way around a structure. And expect to be blown away by the tight controls and beautiful graphics.

Awesome, the wii needs good games other than
    Zelda: Twilight Princess
    Super Paper Mario
    and
    Metorid Prime 3: Corruption

Galaxy and Brawl can be added to those good game list. There's probably others but I can't think at the moment.

But nicely done. The game better be worth my money on Monday!

I like how they say best Nintendo platformer ever and best music in any Nintendo game to date. Expected, being that Nintendo games have their own niche, but it still says a lot.

Honestly, iLLmatic, do you try to criticise anything Nintendo-related? Nintendo created the first scrolling platformer, as well as pretty much owned the genre for the past 22 years. They also have some of the most memorable music to date in franchises such as the Mario, Zelda and Metroid. Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 64 are still remembered as two of the best and most influencial platformers ever, and New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Galaxy topped both of them.

Perhaps if there was any reasoning behind your arguments, rather than blind hate, you might not look as ignorant...

It does seem rather odd that they're restricting their comparison to just Nintendo platformers. What does that say about it? That it's only good when held up against other Nintendo platformers? What about other Wii games in general? Or against other platformers or other games on other systems? The fact that their comparison is so limited in this sense discredits the game.

Like Gogetenks said, Nintendo is known for creating some of the greatest platformers of all time. They're also known for having some of the most memorable video game music of all time. (Zelda, Mario, etc) So for IGN to say that Galaxy is the greatest Nintendo platformer ever and has the best soundtrack, that's some high praise right there.

And iLLmatic, I don't see the point of leaving a comment if all you're gonna do is blindly criticize the game. If you keep this up, you're gonna be worse than guticb.

I don't know, Guticb appears in the Wii forum, I find haters who do it in the shadows way more annoying. He is probably only saying it publicly since Gamegrep mixes it up a little more.

LMAO you guys never stop. Sonic Flash completely understood my point, but you Nintendo fans get all pissy whenever someone expresses their opinions. I'm not the one who wrote the review and stated that its the best Nintendo this and the best Nintendo that, so save your hater talk for the next person.

I'm not blindly criticizing anything; I do not like anything Nintendo produces. Everything they put out is kiddy games and software for the family to enjoy, so I have no reason to expect anything different with Mario Galaxy.. Its my right to have my own preference and you lil dudes really need to get over it. Haters in the shadows? LOL..black doom, you act as if I'm some entity who lives to 'hate' on Nintendo. What would I be in the Wii forum for? I have no interest in anything they produce. Gamegrep, however, is nothing more than a news blog and I'm just as welcome to say my piece as you are. So like I said, get over it.

Lil dudes? Haha, I love how you automatically assume that anyone who plays a Nintendo game is a little kid. I've been playing videos games since the very early 90's, which is probably alot longer then you. Please don't tell me you started gaming with the PS2, lol.

Hmmm... let's see. 2 out of Nintendo's top 3 franchises are both rated Teen. (Zelda & Metroid) And Galaxy is a game that focuses on the 'simple' concepts of gravity and aerodynamics.

Yeah, you're right. Everything Nintendo puts out is kiddy and sucks.

Great interview, well and truly confirms the fact that this game is simply a must-have for all Wii owners, and most certainly a game I will be getting on release. I absolutely love all of the reviews saying that it is the "true Mario 64 sequel".

I played a demo of this game at a software store, and it's a really good game. The sound, graphics, and gameplay are very nice. A 9.7 is a very good score, and I am definitely buying this game.

    A 9.7/10? Bah, I'll probably give it a 100.00/100.00

Whats with people getting pissed at Illmatic for blindly criticizing the game and then someone thumbs up someone for saying they'd give it a perfect store. They're both blind critiques, so why the double standard?

Anyway I like how they say must buy for all Wii owners. Who would buy a Wii and not buy Mario?

off topic...is anyone else with noscript firefox getting a strange error message on gamegrep?

my first gaming system was Intellivision. You probably have to look it up on Google just to know what it is.
Haha, who doesn't know what the Intellivision is? I was more of an Atari 2600 fan, tho.

Is it asinine to say that games on all Nintendo systems are geared toward younger people?
Yes, it's very assinine. Assinine and foolish. How could you say that 'games on all Nintendo systems are geared toward younger people'? As far as 3rd party games go, all three consoles get the same series. Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, EA sports games, etc etc. Just because Nintendo (as a developer) doesn't create gorey first-person shooters doesn't mean they only create kiddy games.

How many people over the age of 17 does Mario and Zelda STILL appeal to? With people like me, we played these simple games over and over when we were kids and grew past it.
Zelda is a fantasy action/adventure game similar to Oblivion. So you're saying Oblivion doesn't appeal to people over the age of 17? And of course Mario appeals to older gamers. Us older gamers were the ones playing Mario back on the NES and SNES. The appeal of a game just doesn't disappear.
    quote
Do you think that ANYONE who picks up and plays Mario Galaxy is the least bit concerned with that?
I am. I'm interested in messing around with the gravity and physics. That's the one of the main selling points of the game, dude.
    quote
Check your attitude at the door LITTLE DUDE, you act as if I'm degrading your life just because Nintendo doesn't do anything for me.
What are you talking about? I'm just correcting some of your rather foolish statements.

Seems like a must-buy for the Wii. Well, I've yet to buy any games for the Wii, so this'll do.
