Gamespot Review: "If ever there were a must-own Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy is it."

Akira_EX | November 07, 2007 | Reviews | Wii
The great reviews just keep coming in.

This time around? Gamespot. With the megaton whopper that is the 9.5/10. Why is it notable? In simplest terms, the internet imploded when this ereview hit the tubes.

You see phrases and sentences like "Practically every galaxy you explore is an absolute joy to experience" and "Mario Galaxy simply takes the basics of what made Mario 64 such a dynamite game, and turns them completely crazy" and it immediately bring smiles to your face, and makes the wait for November 12th even harder.

Review Notes:
Final Score: 9.5/10
Reviewer: Alex Navarro
The Good:
  • Some of the best level designs of any 3D platformer
  • Beautiful, colorful graphics
  • Controls work just about flawlessly in nearly every situation
  • Soundtrack is a delight
  • Lots of stages and tons of stars to find and collect.
    The Bad:
  • A couple of Mario's special suits can be frustrating to use
  • Minimal amount of story doesn't tie everything together especially well.
  • Here is the game that Wii owners have been pining for, a game that has tons of appeal for both the less experienced player and the longtime gamer. A game that deftly combines accessibility and challenge, all wrapped up in a package that's both deep and addictive. Super Mario Galaxy is all of this and more. It is simultaneously one of Mario's best adventures and a game that doesn't require fandom of the portly plumber's previous engagements to appreciate. The sheer quality of Mario Galaxy's wonderful level designs, tight controls, and brilliant presentation is the sort of thing that just about anyone who loves gaming should be able to appreciate, and that many will fall head-over-heels for.

    ...

When all is said and done, the thing that really makes Super Mario Galaxy such a standout game isn't the fact that it's another Mario game, but the fact that it doesn't even need to be a Mario game to be successful. Sure, it's got all the nostalgic flavor Mario fans would want, with the updated soundtrack, familiar foes, and various other Mario-related bric-a-brac scattered throughout the adventure, but the game never leans on these nostalgic aspects as a crutch. It instead puts the whole of its focus on its gameplay design, and with good reason. You could probably swap in just about any other characters from practically any other franchise, and this would still be a phenomenally fun game. That it layers all these memorable characters and components on top of that phenomenal design just makes it all the sweeter. If ever there were a must-own Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy is it.

Yeah, Gamespot usually rates Wii games the lowest out of all the gaming review sites. The fact that they gave Galaxy a 9.5 really tells you something about the game.

This sounds like a really fantastic game. I'm loving the sound of this: Mario Galaxy simply takes the basics of what made Mario 64 such a dynamite game, and turns them completely crazy". Haha!

*pushes Brawl off the top of my most-wanted Wii game list*

Now now, let's not get crazy.

Brawl will still be the best.

Got any proof. No doubt its going to be very fun but you can't say its going to be the best. It seems this Score out shines SSBB.

SSBB doesn't even have a score yet, so how can you tell?

SSBB = hours and hours of replayability with new fresh content everyday, online play, co-op play, loads of unlockables, a stage creator, picture and video recording and sending, and more.
SMG = fun for a month, then it quickly becomes more and more boring, giving it a total life of ~3 months at most.

            You decide.

All that SSBB stuff is here

And Galaxy, like most games of it's kind, will not last for years unless you play it VERY slowly and replay it several times. Face it, Brawl will be better.

Still im not talking about reply value for years catboy. Im talking about ratings. And yeah perhaps the fun value for years will make brawl fun but that had nothing to do with my point.

So again you don't know right now the SMG is practically flawless due to its score 9.8, i can't see Brawl beating or matching that score. So please unless you got proof your point is null and void.

A good rating doesn't mean it's better. Would you rather play a 9.8 game for a month or play a 9.4 game for a year? Unless you're crazy, you'd probably choose 9.4 (which is probably the minimum rating for Brawl, heck the rating may even be higher) for a year, because it's more satisfying. Heck, I own Galaxy and Melee and if I had to choose, I'd choose Melee because it's longer. I got Galaxy yesterday, played it for maybe 10 hours, and I'm almost done with the story. Melee lasted for months, even years, plus it had great multiplayer. Brawl is already at least 5 times better than Melee, with tons more features that will make it last even longer. So tell me Mr. Smarty pants, which is the better game? Unless you hate fighting games or games like Melee or Brawl, the clear answer is SSBB. I happen to like platformers better, and Melee and Brawl are still my favorites, because they go deeper than the razzledazzle of Galaxy. They have sustaining gameplay that is fun for more than one or two people and lasts a lot longer.

Oh, you have even less proof than me. You seem to care only about the ratings, but Brawl doesn't have one yet, so you can't say Galaxy is better from the rating. And I don't see you giving out points of how you are right like I am, you just say that it's better because it has a higher rating, when you can't even compare them by the rating yet.

And in the end, it really is all about preference. We can think one game is better than another one, but that doesn't mean other have to believe it. This argument is silly. Especially when I'm the only one making good points, so unless YOU have some proof, I suggest you crawl back into your hole finalblade.

Looks like that taught him... he's got nothing to retaliate!

This game has to be a must buy, however, i still have my eyes set on brawl but in the time its going to take for it to arrive over here in europe, i might as well give myself a little present in the form of galaxy as all the game magasines are saying that it is the true sequal to mario64, cant wait.

Gamespot usually has crappy taste, but this time I'm gonna have to agree with them.

Except for the "Probably biggest must-own Wii game" part. That's gonna be SSB Brawl.

I'll tell you something I'm not surprised by: Super Mario Galaxy being an absolutely explosion. Game of the Year is written all over the disc, the case, and even the *bleep*ing manual.

A 9.5? from gamespot? This is like the holy grail or something.

Seriously, why the hell does everybody compare this to brawl? They are both completely unrelated games, and both are not even out yet as I write this.

I hear the game makes it extremely hard to get the extra lives that are sprouted throughout the levels.
