Does Brawl live up to the hype?

Gothic Girl | February 03, 2008 | Reviews | Wii
With Super Smash Bros. Brawl being released recently, many gaming sites have now got their hands on a copy and are eager to write their impressions of the game. So does Brawl live up to the hype? addict3d.org certainly thinks the single-player mode does, however they are slightly disappointed with the online mode (as a few gaming sites seem to be, for one reason or another).
Brawl has a lot to live up to. A lot. Not to mention pushed back release dates and rushed shipments.
This is the game many Wii owners have been waiting for. But does it live up to those expectations? Yes, yes it does.

When you're in the thick of it, the PR machine is a little off putting — unless you've already made up your mind that SSBB is going to be ZOMG great.

Just as Super Mario Galaxy turned traditional platform gaming on its ear, SSBB sticks by those conventions and sticks by them closely.
It just does that bigger and grander than ever before. The best thing about the game is that it doesn't shoehorn in Wii-mote controls.
It's the least Wii game Nintendo has published so far — even less so than Twilight Princess.
The game is what Nintendo used to make before it started churning out other stuff.

The Nintendo 2.0 features are nice. The game is simple and fun — but previous Smash Bros. games were simple and fun! The quote-un-quote next gen features in SSBB come up short and/or half-baked.

Imagine if the game had a proper online set-up? Now that would be something to be excited about.
While the online features may seem lacking compared to what is offered elsewhere, the single player more than makes up for it.

I thought this game relied on it's online. I find it damn funny that the one thing Wii Fanboys have been toting is their up and coming Brawl game. It finally comes out and it's got more bugs than Gears.

    Tsk Tsk Tsk.

I wouldn't say it has more bugs than Gears, but it does have it's fair share. Top priority is to fix those lag issues if they can.

I'm more psyched for the offline activities, tbh.

Good thing I really don't care much for online play. I'm getting this game because I know it will be fun with friends.

It was obvious from the beginning that the game was mostly based on singleplayer/offline multiplayer features, online was just the icing on the cake, anybody who has played the past SSB games should've known that...

...does this mean the Brawl articles will finally stop flooding GameGrep already??? It's getting kinda boring now.

It's not icing on the cake if it sucks.

My thoughts exactly. This would be an amazing game even without online, so having it (even if it isn't the best) is just extra.

And you have to expect that there re going to be a lot of SSBB articles. One of the most anticipated games of the past few years has just come out.

Yes I do agree there are a lot of complainers, but it's for good reason. I have no doubt that Brawl itself is pretty fun. Getting a few friends over and having some games is great, but can you have your friends over 24/7 to play games at anytime you want? Can you have a friend on the other side of the world come over in like 5 minutes to have a game? Of course not. It's why online play is a pretty big thing, you can vs friends at anytime, anywhere (well as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection), or if you can't play with friends since they are all busy or something, you can vs complete strangers. Fact, Human is more fun to vs over AI generally. Multiplayer has kept old games alive for years and years. Just look at Starcraft or Diablo 2. Blizzard made those games many years ago, yet they are still played A LOT. If it wasn't for multiplayer then those two games would only get played about 1/4th the amount they are now.

So yeah, there are a lot of complainers, but it's very understandable.

Hm, I know there's quite a few people who may be disappointed with this. I really don't know what to expect. I'm one who uses advanced techniques, and most of them have been removed in this game, so this is the reason why I'm doubting the enjoyment, for myself. But I don't think it will be a bad game, it just loses the speed that I love.

Online play is not what makes Smash a good series. The series had perfect scores without it.

Still, I expected some online experience. But hey, that's in Japan. It's bound to be different in North America.

Who deleted my post, not fair that was an honest opinion from a Super Smash Brothers fan. So like i said i guess i should rent this game. I mean After a few weeks its just going to get boring for me, which is why i was rooting for the online play.

I do get a laugh out of the (many) fanboys in the Brawl forum who expect it's online mode to last them "forever". All games get old, online or not. Even if the online mode was the best part of the game, it won't last forever.

Anyways, I've always been looking forward to the multi-player mode the most. There's nothing better than beating actual family and friends that you know. XD

I always put system gameplay above online gameplay, because in the end, will Nintendo be paying the massive money it does to keep a game like Brawl online in five years? Highly doubtful, and if they do, it'll be a less expansive server. Though it isn't the main draw to a game, its lasting appeal is still very important. Can you sit down with your friends five or even ten years from now and still have an awesome game (ala Melee?) that's what counts.
