Magic: The Rip-Off

teodortenchev | April 13, 2007 | Reviews | PC
In Wizards of The Coast's Magic Online game you pay real money for virtual cards which will costs you just as much as buying them brand new in real life. What's the point when you can play for free? If you like MTG that much, why don't you go out there and buy paper cards? In Magic Online you cannot purchase singles, you buy packs of cards. The only good thing about it is once you collect a complete set of cards you can redeem it... (losing 1 copy of each card from the set online). Without the ability to purchase single cards, this is a daunting task.

The images of the cards you will see in the official online game are low quality, they are not scans of the cards but instead cropped images placed on premade templates for each set. The result looks bad, even the fonts on the cards are simple and ugly compared to the paper cards. The full scans which can be used with MWS, on the other hand, look exactly like the original cards from the meta game we are all familiar with. How come Wizards couldn't make a good pc game? It's not like they earn a lot of money from all of their productions or something like that... They invested so little in this online replica of the game or so it seems. Even the guys from Konami made Yu-Gi-Oh! Online more attractive than this. No offense but this is just the way it is, Wizards made no effort to make a good-looking game. I'm not talking about topnotch graphics but at least something more presentable... I'm disappointed, I really am. Spent 14$ on nothing and some people have over 1000 cards on there. Imagine how much that costs for virtual property.

    That's seriously messed up, why pay real money for something virtual when real cards are better anyway?

      Yeah, it seems like there are a few games like this. I don't see why anyone would want to pay for something like that. That's just me though. Tehe. ^^;

    The idea is that you can play with thousands of people who are online at the same time and there are lots of tournaments available with fairly small entry fees. There are a lot of people who live in areas where there is no sanctioned play, meaning no tournaments or any MTG events at all. I can see how this is good for them but what about all the other people? Maybe they just have too much money and nothing better to spend them on. It's a great way to try out a deck but since you can't buy single cards you can only hope to get your desired deck put together cheaply. It will probably cost a lot more than real cards which you can buy separately on a number of online stores.
