Imperium Romanum, a city building game set in the time of ancient Rome has been released by SouthPeak Games. It spans the course of the empire and allows players to not only build multiple building types and upgrade their settlements, but also features some rudimentary combat too (although according to the review it is the 'weakest' point of gameplay in the title).
Missions usually start the player out with a basic city center from which to branch out into the surrounding environment. After building some houses, the city will begin having a workforce. From there you can start building all the support structures needed to grow your city (water sources, prefectures, etc). The player can also build shops which usually require at least one natural resource to refine into something usable by your populace. You can even target specific families in your city to either help out by giving 100 denari or, if your coffers are low, declare them 'enemies of Rome', seizing their wealth and evicting them.
...While combat is somewhat lackluster in Imperium Romanum, the city-building aspect of the game is fun and engaging. It should satisfy the ancient city planner in you for quite a while. In addition, Imperium Romanum features nicely done graphics while not being a strain on most computers, so it is accessible by virtually anyone thanks to that and its easy learning curve when compared to other city-builders out there...
