The World Ends With You - The beginning of a blockbuster RPG franchise?

twilightprince | April 08, 2008 | Reviews | DS
Square Enix's newest RPG, titled The World Ends With You, will be hitting stores on April 22 ... and according to IGN, this could be the beginning of another blockbuster RPG franchise.

The World Ends With You is not your typical Square RPG, in fact, it's quite the departure. The game is set in modern day Tokyo, and features a deep storyline that relies heavily on character development.
It's not often that Square Enix comes out with some genuinely new IP. Which is hardly a criticism, since the vast majority of all those Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games and spin-offs are nothing short of utterly brilliant. It's just that, after playing The World Ends With You, you'll wish the company would do more of this sort of thing, because it's really, really good. And in many ways it's a bit of a departure for the company. Having built its reputation as one of the world's leading publishers by building exotic new worlds, this game sees Square Enix cement it by entering the real world: Tokyo's fashionable Shibuya district, to be precise.

Sounds like something I'll definitely have to check out...too bad I don't have a DS though.

I've had my eye on this game for quite some time. It's the kind of originality we need in the gaming industry. And if Square Enix wants to make this a full fledge franchise, without deluding its integrity, then I say go for it.

Same here, though I prefer the Japanese names (yes I know, some legal issues). Got a DS just in time for this.

I agree with the general consensus here. Square Enix isn't exactly known for it's new IPs (not that I don't love their Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests), and I'm happy to see that they are taking the time to try something entirely unique. Hopefully we'll see more of this kind of stuff from them in the future.

I've been looking forward to this game for a long time, I'm glad to see that it turned out to be a good game. I definitely plan on buying this when it comes out in North America.

Got This Reserved with 40 Bucks from the holidays left over. It's one of the 4 DS games currently on my list including:

    Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2
    Perfect Prosecutor
Sonic Chronicles (THE CHAO GARDEN IS RETURNING OMG)

The Review Came in The May GI, that most got yesterday.

1st Opinion: 8.25 (Handheld game Of the Month, Got beat by a Shitty baseball game for best game)
    2nd Opinion: 8
