Recently, a massive rumor has been spreading around the internet that stated a Playstation 4 would come out in 2008. It would feature the same chipset, but a faster Blu-ray drive and a software suite that allowed more multimedia capabilities. Sony has now denounced this rumor:

Earlier today, we brought you the story of a Sony "insider" source who said we could see the PS4 as early as 18 months from now. Of course, this kicked off plenty of debate and discussion, so Sony had to respond somehow.

And the response, through Spong, is as follows:

"Obviously, this is garbage."

We had heard that the new machine would feature the same chipset as the PS3, only with an "extensive software suite" that would make it a "true home entertainment console." Of course, we had assumed they were just calling it the "PS4" for lack of a better name; it can't very well be the "PlayStation 4" if it's got the same processor, right?

The thing is, if they wanted to make an upgrade or enhancement, it could be done online via the Network. Furthermore, it would seem to be a terrible idea from a marketing standpoint, primarily because a new PlayStation in "18 months" would completely annoy those who invested a lot of money in the PS3. Sony UK wouldn't say anything further - apparently - but "this is garbage" is plenty direct enough.

For now, we're going to have to mark this down as a major rumor that simply fell flat.

Well clearly it's not a PS4...how many times does Sony have to say that they plan on having the PS3 last for at least 6 years?

If anything it would be like the PSX, which was an updated version of the PS2 with a DVD-WR and multimedia capabilities. i can't imagine what they could add to the PS3, however, because it's so damn functional and compatible already.

They could add more money to it?

I don't get this rumour. What was the point of it? What did it accomplish?

Nothing but a day or two of hype. :/

Anyway, I don't think Sony's going to last long in the future. They run out of ideas really fast, imo. Not being able to come up with a better excuse for the rumour is also not a good sign.

    I don't think there was a point.

I'd hardly doubt they'd release PS4 in 2 years of releasing the PS3.

Sounded like rubbish originally good that it's confirmed to be now. Like the article says it would annoy a lot of people who invested all that money to have a enw console out so soon.

A PS4 is too much for me. I was surprised to see a PS3, but I was impressed. A PS4 is going a little too far, however.

Yes, because everyone opposed to the PS3 is automatically an XBOX fanboy.

I hate rumors too. At first I read the head line, and was like "Another PS? They just came out with the PS3!"
