With the PSP-3000 just being released, rumors from media sources suggest Sony is already making PSP-4000 and plan to release it in 2009. Game developers are currently working on games, according to these sources, though Sony hasn't given any concrete confirmations.

Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor - a PSP2, if you like - later.

Publishing sources, speaking to Eurogamer, were unable to provide any further detail on next year's update, which will presumably follow this year's PSP-3000 in taking an iterative approach. The PSP-3000 launched this October and followed a 2000-series model, the first Slim & Lite, in September 2007.

Even fewer details were available on the PSP successor, but we're told that developers are already working on games.

Sony has not ruled out either scenario, despite SCEE president David Reeves' assertion in MCV last week that "there are currently no plans for a PSP2". "I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it - I think they have their hands full at the moment," he said, non-committally.

    What the hell? A new PSP every year?
    This is starting to make my head spin.
    I mean, what about us fatty users, huh? Keep on making new PSPs, Sony! I'm sure people will be thrilled.

    If you read the original carefully, you'll notice this is just a rumor, as Sony has neither confirmed nor denied it. However, UK exec David Reeves said they have no plans on making a PSP2 right now.

    Taken care of.

      PSP 4000 != PSP2. Just like PSP 3000 != PSP2.
      Just because Reeves said there wont be a PSP2 doesn't mean there wont be a PSP 4000.

      Going up in SKU numbers / versions are soft releases. Announcing a brand new system on the other hand is a totally different ball game.

        You're right, but Sony themselves have yet to confirm the news, so I thought some discretion was warranted.
