The mPS3 has been the most expensive console on the market for quite a while now, leading to it's below-par sales and Sony losing millions. Now Sony is finally giving in, hoping to increase sales by dropping their prices in 2009-below their production cost.

PlayStation 3 will see its price cut to 299 USD this April, with Microsoft to follow soon after by reducing the cost of its Xbox 360 Pro to 249 USD around the time of this year's E3 - that's according to industry Cassandra Michael Pachter, making his predictions for the year ahead in his latest NPD preview.

Below-par sales? If the PS3 is below-par and it is catching up with the much cheaper Xbox 360 then what is the Xbox 360? I am really getting tired of ill informed people putting the Playstation 3 down for something it isn't even doing. It really is getting almost as ridiculous as people over exagerating the RRoD issue these days.

Agreed. It's turning into a meme of the gaming market; "let's hate the PS3 and exaggerate the RRoD 'cause we're too good for normal lifestyles!"

This is just according to an analyst, not official.

And how much does a 360 cost to make? They're cutting the price all the damn time.

Good news to me. I wonder how much the sales will increase if this really does happen.

although I doubt that the 360 will lower the price too much

The PS3 is finally gonna sell. It is priced to sell with some of the other $299 blu-ray players as well as putting it in "regular console price" ball park range. Guess sony said "We're already losing money. What the hell..." Its good to hear about a price drop but it's too bad as well because they were almost about to break even on every PS3 made.

So, effectively Sony are killing themselves. But it's a shame that they have to. I mean, they've only just broke even haven't they? And now they are selling at a loss.

I really doubt this price drop is real. There was a recent article stating against this.

WTF, killing themselves? Get off the hate train, they're not killing themselves, regardless of what they do. I'm just getting tired of seeing every other comment mention Sony as murdering their own baby...
