Apparently Sony is already testing a new console out, or so it seems. On their site (the Japanese one) they have posted job listings for a supposed new console - "Experience an in-development game console (hardware) early!" But reading a little further indicates that this may be some sort of extension to the PS2/P/3. It's also unknown as to which console(s) it pertains to.

This is only a job listing guys, we don't exactly know what it is or what it's for, so don't jump to conclusions.

A job listing has appeared on the Sony Computer Entertainment website, looking for individuals to test "new model game hardware."

The Sony job listing says, "Experience an in-development game console (hardware) early!"

Here is the thing I guarantee you the ps4 has been in development for a long time and this is probably a job for development. That however does not mean it is going to come out.

So like there putting it through development when its not going to come out?!!?!?

      Jk.

I don't doubt they've been working on PS4 for . . . well at least a year thus far. However, I doubt this job offer is for that. I expect it to be a new PS3 or PSP.

Try more like 2 or 3. The PS4 has probably been in developement since they finished the PS3.

It's not like they rush to get a new console built a year before release. First they need design concepts for the case. Set down what the internals will be like. Layout the internals so they fit the case design and vice versa. Build and test the internals. Then they can go into beta testing the hardware. Start getting the software put together. This includes both the operating system as well as the games. Building a console is a long and involved process.

Unless you do it like Microsoft did the Xbox, where you pull a PC off the shelf build a case around it throw and OS in it and get some games built. Then you can get it done in a year or two because nothing really has to be built or tested. You can skip the longest most involved phase. This is also why the early 360 models had so many problems. They fast tracked the testing phase and didn't get enough data.

Is that not what most consoles are? Basically computers? They all have a motherboard with a set of RAM and graphics card and a disc drive. AKA, a computer.

          HisServant77 Feb 20, 09
Well a calculator is a computer also. But we consider it different, right? Hardware-wise most consoles would be computers. But then software-wise is where the difference lies.

The problem with the 360 at first is like Koloth said, they rushed things. That coupled with . . . I don't think they thought the design out well enough. My 360 recently gor RROD! I opened it up to fix it and found certain things I considered messed up for them to do. But Ah well, that's some companies for ya!

          Koloth Feb 20, 09
Yes they are basically computers. However the hardware is laid out differently. It can be very specilized such as the PS2 and PS3. You would never build a PC that way. Nintendo is also very specialized.

The Xbox on the other hand wasn't much more than a fancy PC. Which isn't a bad thing. I mean at least it worked. Just doesn't require as much design work to get it going. Sony on the other hand throws in several different processors or radically different processors. Nintendo tends to come up with some weird new format every generation. Designing a console isn't as straight forward as you make it sound.

Well I mentioned at least only one year because I was kinda excluding any of the thought-process and such. The "building" before actually building or putting things together. It wouldn't surprise me if they had been working on the PS4 in the thought-process, since months before the PS3 even launched. And began building models no less than a year ago. They'd still have some years to go before building a prototype model of what they want the final one to be like, but . . . like you said it takes years to do!

How could they improve the PS3? The only thing that comes to mind is lowering the price.
I strongly doubt that Sony is putting out the PS4. The PS3 has only been around for 3-4 years.

      Seproth Feb 20, 09
Firstly: It's been around for around two and a half years.

Secondly: Everything in any console has been considerably upgraded since the consoles have released. A top of the line PC right now is much more capable then any of the three consoles.

Finally: They're "building" the PS4 soon, it takes years to plan and put together a console. If they started seriously building it now it'd be a year or two before they could release it. However, they'll plan stuff out and sit and wait for the right time to release a new system. This article in no way, is stating the PS4 is releasing soon.

Well personally I'd like the PS3 to have stronger wireless capabilities. Other than that . . . they'd probably be working on making he machine smaller. They seem to enjoy doing that with their consoles haha (PS2, PSP, and I think didn't they even make a PS1 that was smaller . . . portable?)
      • 1
        Koloth Feb 20, 09
They made it smaller yes. But not really portable. However there was a LCD screen accessory that you could buy for it and a car adaptor. So it was somewhat portable that way.

Aha, Yup that's the PS1 I remember . Actually I thought for the longest time that THAT was called the PS1, whereas the original Playstation was simply called Playstation.

I remember thinking that was awesome, taking the Playstation and giving it a screen like that and all. Not enough for me to want it and get it, but still nice.

From what I've heard from people in the industry is that Sony is currently working on the PS4 (or the next iteration of the Playstation whatever they decide to call it).

Anyone think PSP-3000?? I heard they are almost done with it...Why would they start a second project right after another one?? That'll be a bit much in prices. If they are make a ps4 imagine how much that will be. $1000? The Ps3 at launch was $600! Dont jump to conclusions...
    • 1
      tekmosis Feb 20, 09
The PSP 3000 has been out for a while, now. Also, Sony is a big enough company to have production on both the PSP and the Playstation.

      Koloth Feb 21, 09
No, the rumor is the PS4 will actually be cheaper than the PS3 because they will simply upgrade the hardware without any major design changes. In other words faster/bigger drives and chips and more RAM. And of course a new case design. This would save them a bundle in developement costs and allow them to have a lower launch price point. Similar to the Wii in some respects.

        Atomic Feb 21, 09
In my sense of understanding, if the PS4 is going to be superior in all regards to the PS3, wouldn't the PS3 get the price drop, not the PS4?
        • 3
          Koloth Feb 21, 09
No, because your understanding is flawed. By using the same design with upgraded component they keep developement and production costs down. For instance when Intel releases a new CPU model it is typically very expensive around $500. Yet 2 or 3 years later the same model of chip will be significantly faster but cost half the price because they will have improved production methods.

The same thing will happen with Blu-ray drives, the Cell processor, and RAM. And that means that Sony can build essentially a faster more powerful PS3 put it in a new case and call it a PS4 and Sell it for half as much.

Which would be excellent to me, Koloth. I'd like to see a $300 or so PS4

Of course, the PS3 may be the last console I buy though Time is getting too busy for me to play video games anymore

2 more years before a new console should be made. The PS3 just got back on track with some good games, and the wii needs to keep going and make more money that way.

    Shattered Feb 21, 09
If Sony made the PS4, technically all you would be doing is getting a better console. If Sony is going to continue using the cell and blue-ray player, then why not just make a new console that uses PS3 games as the PS4 games.

That way they could just slap on a new case, maybe make it abit smaller and add some more RAM, etc, etc and get the PS3 owners to trade in the PS3 (and keep the HDD), pay maybe a $100 for the new PS4's upgrades and get a PS4.

Then you could just use the PS3's HDD for all your saves, etc.

      Koloth Feb 21, 09
Sony would likely keep backwards compatibility. It has been made clear it is a desirable feature. But PS4 games wouldn't play on the PS3 so I don't quite get what you mean by keeping PS3 games AS PS4 games. The improved specs would make it impossible for the PS3 to run the new games. Just like old PCs can't run newer games very well at all.

On top of that Sony isn't going to take to a trade in model. If you want the new system you will have to buy the new system. They don't really care what you do with the old ones. They will still gladly sell you a PS2. But they don't care what the 21 million PS3 owners did with their old PS2s. And they won't care what you do with your PS3 when they do release the PS4. In 2012.

I would doubt that is the controller. XD. That would be very harsh to play.

      HisServant77 Feb 21, 09
Of course that's not the controller

(In case you didn't already know, it's a rather old picture, a joke that's been around since I think right before the PS3's launch even)

Though it wouldn't be too harsh to play! Talk about being immersed in the game, this controller would have every move your hand makes, and pressure you put on your hands in certain places, control your character in-game!!

It's going to be a new PSP.
With all the rumors and the stuff Shiny Entertainment founder David Perry has said, I would expect to see Sony unveiling the new PSP very soon.

The PSP2 could be on store shelves by the end of the year (in Japan), If they announce it by the time E3 is over. But this is all a bunch of speculation until it's announced.

I can see the same thing, but with the Wii 2 in the future, they are trying to get a spot.
