With all the economic panic going around as of late, it's no wonder companies are trying to cut their losses and weather the storm ahead. IGN takes a different stance, however. They believe that a price cut is imminent for the PS3. According to IGN, the PS3 needs a price cut to counter the slumping sales it has "apparently" been experiencing.

Among IGN's ideas are a Blu-Ray-less PS3 and a flat-out $100 price drop (despite the fact Sony is only $40 off making profit on each console.).

Hickey believes that Sony needs to take at least $100 off the price tag of the PS3, or suffer an extended decline in sales. There is additional speculation surrounding the chance that a Blu-rayless PS3 could be announced, but are there that many potential customers who already have a Blu-ray player that will buy a PS3 just for the chance to play its small catalog of killer software? Our money is that we'll never see a Blu-ray free PlayStation 3, but we agree wholeheartedly that the current price point needs to change to help drive sales, especially in the current economic climate.

Sony's unwillingness to budge on this matter is reaching legendary status, despite the fact that it's well documented that the PS3 has nowhere near the market domination that the PS2 enjoyed. And remember those reports we talked about that showed Sony losing an arm and a leg profit wise across the boards? You'd think that they'd be willing to take some desperate measures to boost sales.

Oops. I meant they're only $40 off making profit on each console.

It's the money. It is making them corrupt. By thinking that they will get a surge of sales at the current price, they are truly missing out.

Well, with the losses they're making right now, I don't blame them for holding back a little. PS3 was the most expensive of the 3, and costs a sh*tload to make. They announced a loss of like 2 Billion dollars last year, cutting the price of a console that is so close to making a profit just doesn't seem right to me.

Corrupt. Wtf are you on about. The only reason they would drop the price is to increase sales and in turn increasing profit.

They only want money either way, How is it corrupt? Its business. I find it laughable how some people on here treat these huge multi billion dollar companies as humans and as if they care for you and all the bull.

Haha, you know, a PS3 price cut has probably been the most talked about rumour about the PS3 since launch. I know they cut prices already, but I'm just saying that it seems that is the most talked about with the PS3. Price cut, Price cut, Price cut.

One thing though, does IGN not understand that the PS3 games ARE Blu-Ray? To have a Blu-ray-less PS3 is like having a 360 without a dvd drive. Hey, that's not a bad idea, let's make ALL the consoles cheaper by taking out the dvd drive, bd drives, and (whatever the wii uses, since it apparently uses something unique, right? Or is it cd?)! I mean hey, who buys video game consoles to play video games with these days anyway?

Wow. Pure genius. You know, I bet those two ideas have never occurred to Sony. And I'm sure a price-drop will only result in good things, in fact, why don't they just give PS3's away. Nah, I'm sure a price-drop hasn't occured to them at all, I mean it's not like they'll have had meetings about it or anything. No, just drop the price and all of a sudden your problems will vanish.

But they're losing money as it is, how can selling for less help?

So what? This is the land of make-believe where people who are losing money purposely lose more money and become rich and those who don't are greedy, stubborn and stupid. Didn't you know? All they need to do is sell their product for less and they'll be riding unicorns across rainbows to the money fountains like Nintendo and Microsoft!

Too much? Fair enough. You get the point though.

I honestly hope they don't remove anymore features. It's ridiculous that they force people to deal through Ebay just to get a proper PS3 as opposed to the ones currently in production that have a fair few less features. They should at least keep one model in production for people like me who are willing to fork over the cash for all of the bells and whistles.

Seriously? IGN editors must be huge F'ing idiots. A Blu-rayless PS3 huh. Brilliant. Lets just make a console that CAN'T actually play any of the games made for it. Good plan definitely going to attract a lot of customers that way.

And then we'll drop the price when we're already losing money. Did these guys flunk out of the business school for morons? Pretty sure the first two lessons are "make products that work", and "sell them for more than they cost".

Exactly what I said. It's ridiculous how some people think, don't you agree? Especially those with enough notoriety to be heard! Why aren't the common sense people getting the attention and having a voice?

There shouldn't be a price cut with the current set of features. Once they get the manufacturing cost down, the price may eventually sag, but I think Sony is much closer to profit than $40 a console, due to the new chip manufacturing process. Its something they don't announce like Microsoft because they don't need smaller chips to keep them soldered to their mother boards.
I believe with the economy the way it is they need to try and make each unit profitable at the current price. This article goes a long way to show you why video gamers are not given much respect. The writers appear to have elementary, consumer driven knowledge of how to run a business( I want one so the price should be lower!! Come on, mom, get me that!!)

Sony would be taking a big loss if the price were to be lowered. They've been in the red with PS3 for a good amount of time. Right around the time they are about to jump into the black, they'd lower the price? Ridiculous.

What PS3 needs to do is prove it can compete with its two competitors and build its library up. They need undecided gamers to buy PS3's and those who already own a 360 to consider the investment.
