The source has heard a rumor apparently claiming Sony will announce a Slimline PS3 at E3. There are severe doubts in this, even by them, saying that it could easily be something minor like a Controller update, etc. Although a slimline PS3 would be nice for the people who hate the PS3's bulky size, it may be difficult to do spec wise.

Of course this is just yet another rumor, as there is no official confirmation. But we caught word that Sony is set to not only reveal the PSP Go at E3, but another hardware redesign will be debuted as well.

We didn’t get any specifics, but we speculate that it could be one of a couple different options. First off, it very well could be as simple as a white or a silver PS3, to go with the white and silver Dualshock 3’s that have been made available. This makes sense, as most people would want their controllers to match their consoles.

Well lets hope it doesn't end up like the PS2 Slim and heat up faster than a fat kid running through a desert.

That must have only been the first original lots.I own a slimline PS2 and I can play it for hours without it getting hot.

I agree it isn't likely. The PS3 had a lot of empty space, the PS3 on the other hand is pretty compact. Not a lot they can reduce, not enough to make a big different anyway.

Wait, what do you mean? There's tons of space in the PS3. Not sure about the newer models but if you have an older one, it's translucent and you can see they could shave off the whole top because of it being empty. And that's not changing any specs. I'm sure they could/would change specs.

If they made a slim PS3, I'm curious how they'll do it, what it'll look like, and if I'd consider getting it . . .

Can Sony afford yet another SKU right now? This feels like something they need to wait on for another two years or so.

They don't really have any of the SKU confusion that they had in the beginning. I'm pretty sure it's just down to one or two at the moment. And these are basicly the same thing, but with different hard drive space. A slimline would be completely different, and would probably take up most of the market for people buying PS3s anyway.

its a pretty good idea though - if they can use this to lower their price further then it could turn out ok.
however, its a pretty big gamble - its flip or flop.
how is the ps3 as a blu-ray player? i would'nt mind picking one up if its for that purpose

Sony's strategy has been to add new features and keep the price point the same, rather than dropping the price point and keeping the features the same. It's a risky strategy, but at the same time it's good for the consumer who can afford that price-tag in the first-place.

They've lowered the PS3's price by what, $200 . . . I'd say that's hardly keeping the price point the same. They've added features, reduced production cost and thus been able to lower the price by a third.

I meant their current strategy, such as over the past year and the foreseeable future.

    This can go down with:

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE TO BE ANNOUNCED AT E3 *insert year

METAL GEAR SOLID 4[360]/5 TO BE ANNOUNCED AT E3!

SLIMLINE PS3 TO BE ANNOUNCED AT E3 *insert year.

This is plausible though. Not true, but plausible for Sony. It would be beneficial if they could lower the production price without cutting things out, as they could really beef up their sales with this year being so good for the PS3.

Who knows, maybe some of it's tech as gotten more compact versions lately? I dunno, i'm not a really techy dude.

I think we wont see a slim PS3 for around another 2 years.

Isn't the ps3 completely compact and full to the brim? I don't think there is enough room for a smaller size.

By looking at pics of a disassembled PS3, it seems that the internal power supply and cooling system take a large amount of the case's space, so by switching to a power brick and shrinking the CPU and cooling system and by trimming the Blu-Ray drive and other parts, you could trim it down a bit.

It's possible, Sony is planning on switching over to 45nm Cell processors around the middle of the year.
So that may allow them to shrink the PS3 a bit, along with lowering the manufacturing cost of it.

And a new cheaper PS3 would really stir up sales for Sony, and it would probably start outselling the 360 worldwide.
So it makes sense for Sony to redesign it.
I just hope they don't announce a redesign right after I buy a PS3, that would suck.
