Looks like Tomb Raider is getting a reboot- the gameplay will be revamped, it will be open-world and more survival-horror oriented, and Lara's story will be written from scratch. Theres has been no official confirmation on this yet, so take it with a grain of salt.

The original source goes to the site which first obtained the leak. Look at the alt. source for kotaku, which gives more details.

Say hello to the concept art for the new Tomb Raider reboot. Our mole, deep behind enemy lines (and armed only with his digital camera), woke me up at 2 in the morning to deliver you these goods. I haven't had a chance to fully digest the information here (getting it to you as quickly as possible was my paramount concern) but it seems like the new Tomb Raider will be, wait for it, Open World. Looks like the combat system has been completely revamped and that the story is starting over from Jumpstreet. I have no idea what the story is with the clawed... things... but, out of everything, they excite me the most. More screens through the portal.

Wow that looks like an ugly Lara.

Personally I don't like the sound of this.People who think the game is stale will likely disagree with me.But I may stop playng TR if they do this.

i thought its already had like 5 reboots? what about the 3 ones on 360 alone? TR Anniversary was a reboot, was it not?

      Existence Jul 12, 09
It wasn't, actually- just a remake. And the reboots weren't actual reboots- they just changed the venues and active storylines (while still retaining the old storylines) This one, if true, will be a true reboot, ie, erasing all the storylines, starting afresh, etc.

Wasn't Legends a reboot? It had nothing to do with any of the past tomb raider games.

Another reboot? Damn, the legend saga was good, and I still want more, I didn't get the chance to play Underworld yet, but I doubt it would end there after 2 games.

Survival horror oriented intrigues me though. If it is more S/H then proceed.

you were saying 'erasing the storyline'? this game is basically going to be a prequel to TR1, like Silent Hill Origins..

Well then, it can't be called a reboot. Rebooting a franchise also involves creating a new back story.

how so? Resident Evil4 was a reboot, did that game erase any story? no.

RE4 only revamped the gameplay. RE6 is the reboot, if rumours are to be believed.

RE6 is going to be the second reboot.. they never said it can't have the old charcters and plot.

well anyway, I don't agree with your definition of a reboot. it can have a whole new story, or it can be a prequel or whatever. what matters is the game(play).

Prince of persia was called a reboot, although they didn't change the ganeplay by much.

Eh, w/ever, we don't agree with each other, lets leave it at that.

well, then let's say it depends on the developer.

the gameplay still has to be changed, at least somewhat, the plot doesn't matter as much.

TR had one reboot - Legend (2006). Anniversary was a remake of the first 1996 game. Underworld was the sequel to Legend, it was just a game in the series.

I don't understand reboots. Well, in some cases, I get what the creators are trying to do, sometimes it' a different take on a similar story, but I just hate when they seems to change absolutely everything but the title.

Like with Max Payne 3. They're seemingly changing everything about what Max Payne is. In fact, that's not even a reboot, it's a sequel, so that just makes things even worse.

If you change everything about a game, why call it a sequel or a reboot? Why not just make it a new IP?.....Oh, that's right, money....I get it now...

Continuity. Yes i know it's a reboot and for that they must kill anything that continues from game to game, but often writers and developers dig themselves into a hole that they cannot get out of. Often a game franchise can offer more than they have gotten out of it so instead of going through the phases of creating an entirely new game from scratch, it's easier and cheaper to re-design an old game. This Tomb Raider is that re-design, starting a fresh fundamentally but still retaining quite a few elements such as the female lead and the name.

I agree with Drogo Baggins. If the new Tomb Raiders are open world, survival horror-ish, have new gameplay, a new looking Lara, and a new backstory for Lara, then they might as well just create a new IP. (it's not like the "Tomb Raider" name creates huge sales anyway).

Fair enough if they want to reboot the series with an update because, let's face it, the series has been stale for a while. But getting rid of everything that makes Tomb Raider "Tomb Raider" is more than a reboot. It's a new game/series alltogether.

Tomb Raider is still popular and it's alot safer to call this next game tomb raider since chances are it will do better under the tomb raider name.

Capcom was probably thinking the same exact thing with Resident Evil 4.

Games just do better under an already established name. It's the safer alternative. Though I would prefer it to be under a new title.

if they change everything but keep the same basic cave exploration idea and have a woman as the main character, but change her name and call it something other than TR, everyone will be calling it a TR ripoff, so i guess might as well just keep the name.

      Shinobi_razor Jul 13, 09
thats what i say yeah, cause 1 of the 3 360 ones (Anniversary, Legends and Underworld) has to be a reboot since they didnt have much to do with each other.

Underworld was the sequel to Legends, and Anniversary was just a remake to....celebrate the TR anniversary.

Why are they continually making more and more TR games? Give them a rest. Although this is a very very good idea to channel interest back in the series, why couldn't they do this to a series that has been dormant for several years? Like LOK for example??

      dwg14390 Jul 13, 09
what do you mean give them a rest?

Legends came out in 2006, as the much needed reboot.
Underworld the sequel came out in 2008. 2 years later.

Anniversary was more just for a celebration of Tomb Raiders...I don't know 10th anniversary? Only 3 games.
      That's it. 3.

This year we aren't even getting TR and by the looks of it, next year as well.
