The short story of this is Cliff Bleszinski from Epic Games does not deny a selectable female character next game. This little blip lines up with a piece of comic book art from the Gears comics.

Could the Gears of War franchise finally be getting its first playable female character? …maybe. It’s the weekend, “real” news doesn’t happen.

Speaking with 1 vs. 100 LIVE host Chris Cashman during the August 1st live game, Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski, better known to gamers as “Cliffy B”, “The Cliffster” and “Captain Snugglepuff”* was asked if gamers could ever expect to play as a female character in a Gears of War game. Cliff’s answer, in short, was that he could not comment on “possible aspects” of a game that “may or may not” be in development.

Typical.

However he did quickly follow that comment by mentioning the female Gear that is sitting on the head of a slain Brumak (image above) for the cover of a Gears of War comic book and saying that she “may or may not” be involved in any “as-yet-unannounced” video game projects.

Now we all know there is going to be a Gears of War 3. It hasn’t been announced officially yet, but considering how incredibly popular the first two were, a third one is inevitable.

*Don’t ask.

I don't want to sound sexist, but I don't like this idea, even if it is just a rumor.

if they do have a chick, which im fine with, she will be all 'roided up and manly looking that she may as well be a guy anyway.

HAHA, That's exactly what I was thinking...

The only way I can picture it is as Shinobi mentioned it. They always could make Bernie Mataki playable but she's too old to really fight the entire time. I don't want some sexy looking girl going around chainsawing locusts, they need to be fit enough to take down a Cog soldier.

Being smaller brings the advantage of increased agility -- this would make it plausible. Besides...they've all got huge guns...it doesn't make too much of a difference. Smaller might even be better as one would have greater evasive/cover skills.

Agreed, pooOBKp. I was also thinking of Bernie when I read this headline -- I think she'd be a cool addition to the cast, whether or not she's playable in the campaign. The novels explain why females aren't out in the field anyway, and I'd hate for them to ruin the Gears mood with blatant sex appeal... like Zero Suit Samus.

Bernie would be perfect though. She proved herself more than capable of holding her own despite her age, and playing as a war-hardened older woman would be a cool alternative to your average video game female. I would love to see her brought to life in the games.

I'm so glad someone else knows who Bernie is, most people I talk to about Gears can't seem to know anything beyond the second games story. If she's involved in the game at all she'd probably just be in it for the length that Dizzy or Tai were, long enough to get her a spot in the multiplayer options. Cliff B is probably just stirring stuff up, or the people misunderstood him.

Dude, chicks FTW. Always got to be the chick in videogames. They just rock. Zoey from L4D is the shit.

Yeah but this is Gears where testosterone is king so it's probably less 'Dude, chicks FTW' and more 'Dude-Chicks FTW!'.

Her left eye looks a lot closer to her nose than her right eye . Might just be the shadows playing an illusion though.

Actually, I prefer to welcome our new female COG overlords.

I can see a cat fight happening between said female COG and the locust queen.
