Fallout: New Vegas was announced last year as a spin-off of Fallout 3, the highly successful RPG released in 2008 by Bethesda, the only details being that it would be set in Vegas, and would be developed by Obisidan. This poster at gamespot lists some very interesting facts about New Vegas, including a background system similar to Dragon Age: Origins, citing a "reliable source". Have a look.

With a strong caveat, those hungry for information may be pleased to learn of some new information that’s recently surfaced on the GameSpot forums, divulged by a ‘trusted source’ at GameInformer concerning the magazine’s next cover – which is to supposedly feature Fallout: New Vegas.

- Similar to Dragon Age: Origins, at character creation the player can select from different background stories. The first few hours of the game are different depending on which background you choose, and you get some unique perks based on your background when the main game begins.

- One background story is shown, Chinese Agent. The background story takes place before the bombs fell. The player is part of a team of Crimson Dragoons infilitrating Hoover Dam. You manage to sneak through the Americans' defenses, set explosives, and head to an extraction point, but your escape is cut off by American soldiers in Power Armor. The player and other survivors of the Crimson Dragoons take refuge in a cave in the canyons, where they commit hari kari with cyanide capsules. The player about to do the same when the bombs fall. The background story ends an indeterminate time later, when the player exits the cave, removes his helmet, and sees his ghoulish reflection in the waters of the Colorado River.

Cars alone make Fallout: New Vegas more true to Fallout lore than Fallout 3 was. Though this game is being produced by J. Sawyer who was the man behind Van Buren: Fallout 3 at Black Isle Studios before it was cancelled, so I see New Vegas as the true sequel to Fallout 2.

      Because of... cars?

You grew up in a vault and didn't know how to drive. Hell, think of fast travel as cars. It's not like they didn't exist at all, they just didn't want to go into a whole other level of gameplay on top of what they already had but also didn't want to tack it on half-arsed.

Jeez, it's cars. Get over it.

You haven't played Fallout 2 have you? It's kinda like I dunno GTA losing cars. In Fallout 2 when you finally found a car that worked it was like playing a totally different more open game. And while I mentioned cars alone, there are so many things that New Vegas looks to be doing that keep it closer to the original Fallout lore, the lore that Bethesda completely raped. If people think Fallout 3 is good play Fallout 2.

Also not knowing how to drive? It's a *bleep*ing wasteland, there are no laws and very little to crash into. It makes more sense to have a car than to click a damn button and fast travel.

I have played Fallout 2, I just don't have ridiculous expectations. Are cars 100% integral to Fallout gameplay in order to maintain fun, atmosphere and style? No. Are they tricky and as such time consuming to program properly in a 3D open world game like Fallout? Yes. Would including them have put a fat delay on the game making whingers whinge some more? Of course.

Comparing it to GTA losing cars is stupid. GTA has auto (as in automobile) in the *bleep*ing name and is core gameplay. The only reasonable comparison to GTA losing cars would be if Fallout lost the nuclear war.

Jesus Christ you're just blowing it out of proportion. Don't act like such a fanboy.

Interesting stuff, I hope we get a release date and some more information on this game as it seems to be all hidden up.

Its a very cool concept if true. I wonder if there is a Brotherhood of Steel or Enclave Origin?

Like all the leaked stuff if it's true, multiple backgrounds will be excellent for multiple playthroughs. Giant car eating sandworms? love it lots.

I was getting worried about this game being developed by someone other than Bethseda. But I think I might have over-reacted.

    Sounds real nice so far.

I hope this stuff is real, but it sounds too good to be true TBH.

Play as a ghoul? People have been wanting that.

    Gambling?

    Vehicles?

    Yeah....Well, we'll see.

Well, in one of the comments it says it was confirmed false via twitter. Whether or not he/she is telling the truth is another story.

Anyone with a twitter account confirm this?

You don't need a Twitter account to check. There's nothing on Bethesda's account anyway.

Why are people arguing if it's going to be a truer sequel to 2 than 3 or not? It's painfully obvious, I mean it's being made by Obsidian, which is comprised of Black Isle employees.

Nobody's arguing about that, I'm just telling old stick in the mud that Fallout 3 wasn't, and I quote, 'raping the franchise'. It's an argument that F3 isn't, in fact, the spawn of hell and all that embodies the hatred that *bleep*wit is giving it.

Personally, I hope NV goes with the Fallout 3 formula, instead of the old Fallout games.
