Mass Effect 2 has been heavily rumored to be ported over to the Playstation 3 for quite some time. Apparently, the PC version of the game contains code referring to “PS3.”

As per usual I'll say this is likely just a mistake and nothing more, but from what I've seen of the trailers Mass Effect 2 is looking pretty damn sweet, so I won't complain if it ends up being true

You don't add in code as a mistake. As they said that was just one instance. If the mapping data was there for the PS3 in the Defaultengine.ini file then the rest will have been coded aswell. Coders are paid above the odds these days not to make mistakes they would percilessly trek over and over to make sure it wasn't a fault, it wouldn't have been missed.

I personally stand by my own speculation that EA/BioWare were testing the PS3 with Dragon Age to see if it could do what they wanted. They will then work on porting Mass Effect 1 and then release Mass Effect 2 six months to a year later. PS3 wouldn't accidentally turn up in the .ini file, they have made 3 versions of this game.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised to see a special edition port of the trilogy released when ME3 comes out Daweii. I would be greatly surprised if EA didn't want to port them to PS3 and make more money.

Uh-oh, hide anything that can be thrown, someone's gonna have a hissy fit

This gives me hope. I'm still avoiding ME2 info and vids until they confirm anything (which won't be for a while if the past is anything to go by) but with this and that interview from before, I have hope.

Or maybe these guys who "found" it mistook it for PS3 code when it really wasn't. Now, I don't know jack shit about coding, but I'm just sayin', there's always a possibility.

Didn't doubt it from the start. There's something new every month to add to the speculation. Probably only a matter of time before Mass Effect 2 will be on the PS3, especially with EA.

Yeah but...shouldn't they at least put the first game on the PS3 as well? :S Bit weird having one without the other, and you won't get those few extra changes/options that you'd normally get if you have Mass Effect game data on your system.

Well they're either going to port both or find a way around it, maybe make a Fallout 3 style intro where you play through some of the important things of ME1 and change it that way (whilst getting a nice backdrop on story).

This is Bioware though, so I wouldn't expect them to just leave that out if they do port it.

Well here's the thing guys... they use the Unreal Engine 3 and that has support for the PS3 natively. It wouldn't surprise me to find mention of the PS3 as I'm sure certain aspects of the code are not written by hand, like say, pieces of it that are dedicated to the basic UE3 engine.

I would love for this to be true, and you would think a coder would remove any unnecessary parts for more efficient code, but that being said. I don't think this is any kind of concrete proof that they have even attempted at working on putting Mass Effect on the PS3.

Taken from one of the comments on n4g:

"I didn't actually look at the web page. I assumed it looked the same as the PS3 code I saw from the first Mass Effect. My bad!

Those type of variables certainly aren't default code. Those variables are named on purpose. That's a pretty big clue.

It's funny because I'm currently in my Unreal Development class right now and should be creating new mutators, not talking about PS3 code.

      Back to work for me!"

So there actually might be something to it.

At the end of the day speculation is speculation. They're either being massive *bleep*-teases by leaving it in or it's just misread Unreal.

Either way dwelling on it will only result in disappointment until it's confirmed.
