Since the day the Playstation 3 released, Gamespot has made it their job to show us the graphical difference between multiplatform games on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. At the beginning, it was obvious the PS3 was just a bit behind, but as time went on, and Gamespot continued making graphics comparisons, it was clear that the PS3 had reached an equilibrium with the 360 in multiplatform games.

Well, Gamespot's done it again. Today they bring you the PS3 vs. 360 Graphics Comparison Round 4. Once again they set out to provide hard evidence of which console provides better visuals. And guess what game they used as their basis of their "factual" decision:

Fallout 3

What were they thinking?

The PlayStation 3 platform is now two years old, and the Xbox 360 has just passed the three-year mark. That means several second-generation games have appeared on both systems since our last graphics comparison feature. We're still seeing the occasional first "next-gen" development effort, such as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but many development studios are now releasing their second projects for the current-generation consoles. Bethesda, for example, has followed up on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with Fallout 3. All of the additional experience developers have had with both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 means that the window for blaming performance issues and graphical shortcomings on platform growing pains is coming to a close.

Of all the games, they chose Fallout 3? Are they high?

    Pretty huge difference in quality.

Why is so horrible they used it as an example?

Huge difference in graphics between PS3 and 360? That's a first I've ever heard of it. I mean...huge being the type that you don't have to squint your eyes, or replay the video or...you know..having to use extreme deductive skills or something like that. Though the typical "One's darker than the other" doesn't usually work because...well those are not positive nor negative qualities.

Huge difference would be a PS3/360 on Wii comparisons.

It's a noticeable difference, there seems to be quite a bit of pop-up as well as differences in terrain texture.

Again; why is it such a horrible thing they used Fallout as an example?

Not really any radical differences I suppose...kinda defeats the purpose of these things. I think the whole graphics comparison is pretty stupid really.

I really went into making the article with an air of sarcasm since GS never does comparisons right.

Well if you had both consoles and had a choice of both; and one has graphical advantages over the other, which one would you choose?

@Red9, how do they "not do comparisons right"?

They just seem to pick some bad games for comparisons, like Fallout 3, which we all know was developed in favor of the 360. They've only picked a good game maybe once. Besides, if you want to compare the TRUE power of each (or at least for 360), you'd use exclusive titles like Uncharted and Gears 2.

Except multiplatform games don't have any noticeable or big differences nowadays which is the point. Especially Fallout 3. Both versions are the same thing.

I DO have both consoles, and I'm actually more worried about which one is more malfunctional than the other than to worry about petty graphical differences.

@Red9 point taken, and I agree with you.

@FB What the hell are you going on about? The graphics may only be slightly different, but you can tell theres a gap in terrain quality/pop-up.

@Seeker, Fair enough, I have both consoles as well, but hasn't the PS3 version suffered some pretty bad glitches? Like freezing when friends log in, etc.

They don't freeze, the game pauses itself till the notification is gone. Which can be avoided because I can turn off the notifications anyways. I'm not personally familiar with any bad glitches myself though.

There really isn't any difference Absolute unless you're trying to find one. Trust me, I have a keen eye in detecting differences, while I did see some light terrain then the other or darker sky then the other in Fallout 3 its hardly anything to say "OMG this one looks graphically better" When there's nothing "BIG" as I stated early to care about.

No offense not trying to call you one, but only fanboys will claim this one is graphically superior or care about small insignificant difference. That's my point, while Fallout 3 was made in the mind on 360, there isn't anything difference and both are technically the same. After watching the comparison video for both multiple times I've realized both have the opposite issues. Like PS3 has lighter ground terrain while 360 may have darker, but 360 has lighter sharper sky, where as the PS3 is darker and not sharp. It's hardly anything to get crazy about. Which is why bringing this game into it is ridiculous. Read the article if you don't believe me, everyone stated there's no significant difference.

The only picture that actually made me go "wow" was the close up of Green Lantern from the Mortal Kombat vs DC game. PS3 definitely seemed to use lower res character models.

MK vs DC wasn't all that great a game though. Some better examples are COD4 and Dead Space; they were 100% identical.

@FB: Well the only 2 things that I noticed were the terrain (take a look at the rocks on the first 2 screenshots--they're just not as crisp as the 360's). And the pop-up, which I for one hate.

Its hard to tell pop-up from videos, I watched it several times and didn't notice any. I'm just saying that FO3 being used is ridiculous.

If you want to see pop-up just look at the screenshots, a tent in the background doesn't even show up.

I still don't see why its such a bad game to compare..

Cause if you're going to attempt to provide factual 'evidence' of something, you only use the best examples. Fallout 3 isn't exactly the best example.

If graphical difference means so little, then I don't get what the above debate is for.

Supply a source that stated that Fallout was created with the 360 in mind, and I will accept your point.

All I said was that there is a noticeable difference.
