NIS has showed off some screenshots of their upcoming PS3-exclusive RPG, Last Rebellion. The screens show the game's battle system and cut scenes. There's plenty more of where these came from, so be sure to check out the source for more pictures.

Apparently, Last Rebellion *is* coming out this year, but not in North America. Nippon Ichi Software officially announced the game for Japan and slated their first 3D RPG for 2009.

Last Rebellion is developed by Hit Maker, the same studio behind Blade Dancer and A Witch’s Tale. In the game you control two characters Nine, a swordsman, and Aisha, a magic using “sealer” that share a body and a HP meter.

This batch of screenshots gives us a better look at the battle system which shows Nine or Aisha fighting solo. Similar to Front Mission and Vagrant Story players can target specific body parts like arms to reduce an enemy’s ability to attack or their legs to slow them down.

    Wow...very unimpressive. I guess we're looking at a severely budget-restrained game here...

      It's a NIS-published game. Enough said.

It's even more heartbreaking that it's PS3 exclusive. There is so much more they could be doing with this and aren't; it's really an insult to the PS3's hardware to put what seems like so little effort in.

I mean, even a PS2 can supply better environments than that.

Heartbraking? That's taking it a bit far isn't it? Sure it doesn't look spectacular, but I would have no problem playing it. It's obviously a cheap niche title for Japan anyway, they're are a dozen of games like this for all platforms.

yessir, heartbreaking is too strong of a word. Point is, though, it's still pretty sad.

@Red 9 - Apparently you're not all that familiar with NIS....They've never been the forerunners of pushing a given console's potential to its limit >_>

For NIS, this is actually pretty good. Mostly they deal in the 2D, and sprite based combat.

They stay in business by providing amusing, fun, and addictive gameplay and stories.

Lol, a male and female (right?) sharing the same body? Interesting situations would be bound to happen XD

Truth be told, I've never even heard of NIS before. Though why would you run a company by putting out games that at least suffice for fun? Why wouldn't they want to push themselves to make some really nice games instead of settling for "good enough". IMHO 'good enough' is never enough.

Because they don't make $100's of millions of dollars a game, like SOME companies? They don't have Blockbuster movie sized budgets.....

Basically, they're a niche company, their games appeal to a certain demographic, but it isn't exactly "ZOMG, MUST BUY THE NEXT FF!!!" sized demographic....

They develop niche titles, and license others for out of Japan release.

If they took a risk and pushed a crapload of money and time into developing a state of the art game, they'd run the serious risk of going out of business....

Yeah the environments do look like slightly suped up PS1 graphics but the characters look rather nice if not the best.
