Uncharted 2 vs. Uncharted: A Hi-Res Graphics Comparison

When Uncharted: Drakes Fortune released on the Playstation 3, it was praised as one of the best looking console games. It was almost mind boggeling to think that Naughty Dog could surpass these graphics when they announced Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Now, years later, Uncharted 2 is weeks away from release. With reviews pouring in, Uncharted 2 looks like it has surpassed Uncharted: Drakes Fortune in almost every way. And one of those is in the graphics compartment.

While its no doubt that Uncharted 2 looks better then Uncharted 1, it's the improvements between the two. There is a significant improvement between these two games, and its quite amazing how to see what ND can do.

These images where taken at a 1280x720 and cropped, not resized, to avoid downgrading.

    Yes Uncharted 2 is more technically proficient, but it doesn't equate to a much more visually impressive game. This is mainly down to the first being such a milestone. This same issue will hit games like Crysis when Crysis 2 comes out, Uncharted is not alone here and it is no discredit to Naughty Dog.

    Uncharted 2 is a very pretty game and does improve over Uncharted: Drakes Fortune through better lighting, motion blur, better HDR and other technological things, but it's improvement isn't huge. Where you will notice the biggest changes is in how smooth the game runs, it is still the same 30FPS as it was in the first but gone is the screen tearing that plagued it.

    Naughty Dog have obviously tried their best here and have bested their first effort if only by a small amount. This of course is nothing bad considering the first is still one of the best looking games of all time. Overall nice comparison though it showed me nothing I didn't already know, pretty game but not a massive leap over what has already been seen.

      Well trying to enact a huge leap over the original Uncharted is simply too difficult a feat for any console of this generation. You make it sound like they should have made Uncharted 2 phot-realistic.

        I don't actually. I just analysed that the leap wasn't that huge because of a good looking first game. I didn't actually suggest what it should be and I am actually impressed they made the game look better even if it's only minimal, on paper it shouldn't happen as Uncharted was already pushing the limits of the PS3's GPU. Sure different rendering paths and art styles could get them closer to photo-realism but that is not Uncharted and thus I would NEVER want it to go that way. I merely plotted why the leap wasn't as huge in technical terms for those that may care and to those perhaps expecting Uncharted 2 to make Uncharted 1 look visually terrible.

    Is it me or is the only reason there doing a comparison with the old game is because there isn't a 360 version to compare to?

    Seriously can't we leave these stupid graphics comparisons alone?
    Unless Uncharted 2 is noticeably worse than the first one there's no point.

      It's not really a "Which is better?" comparison, it's more to show how much progress they've made between the two games. At least that's how I interpreted it.

      Might even be pushing "platform" on that too. Visually in many regards Uncharted 1 and 2 are pushing into territory only Crysis could enjoy. It's not just a pretty console game but it's a pretty game full stop, if this was on PC it would be considered a very pretty game in comparison to all the pretty games on PC. This game is universal in it's good looks, it transcends the platform graphics barrier that is normally in place that even now seperates the lower res console games from the PC games.

    Well I think the Uncharted 1 shots are little off (as in not exactly the best looking parts of the game), but even so Uncharted 2 is definitely looking hot.

    Uncharted 2 is way better. but its still suckish
